AUCKLAND REGATTA.

["BY TELEGRAPH .J {Per Press Agency.') Auckland, January 29, The regatta to-clay was largely attended. The following are the, results:— For the Trading Vessels race, for crafts of 25 tons and upwards ; Ist prize, £SO and one-third of the sweepstakes of £5 each ; the other two-thirds to go to the second boat—the following were entered : —Arcadia, Belle Brandon, Mary Logan, Sovereign of the Seas, Ada, and Nellie. Belle Brandon won by a considerable lead, Nellie second. For the Yacht race, Ist prize, a cup value £2O, and £lO added ; 2nd, £5. The entries were—Victory, JJaphine, Contrahandista, Thames, Erin, Victoria, Good Templar and Walshaw. This was a capital race. Daphine led in the run down, but in beating up Erin drew ahead, and had gained

a quarter of an hour’s lead when her jib was carried away; the Daphine came up and parsed the flagship first, but Erin is the winner on time allowance. In the Man-of-war Cutter race, the German man-of-war boat Bertha beat the Sapphire’s boat. The Sapphire’s crew have challenged them again. The Thistle won the Trading Cutter race. In the Open hailing race—let prize, £5 ; 2nd, £2 ; there were eleven entries. The wind was so strong that only Bismark was able to go round. The Trading Vessels race—Avon, 1 ; Un* dine. 2. The Rowing races are all - postponed till to morrow. During the regatta a boat called the Peacock, competing in the race for sailing boats under 20ft, capsized. The tug steamer Transit went to her rescue. Four of the crew kept afloat, one could not swim but clung to the sprit which floated, another was saved by clinging to a life buoy thrown from the steamer.
