NEWS OF THE DAY.
Crime in Christchurch.— Some idea of tbo work done by the city police, and the amount of business transacted at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, may be judged from the fact that during the year 1876, 1219 males ; were arrested and 218 females, disposed of as follows Discharged by Magistrate—Males, 143 ; females, 29. Summarily convicted or held to bail—Males, 1049 ; females, 186. Committed for trial —Males, 27 ; females, 3. Butchers’ Picnic.— A committee meeting was held last evening in the Britannia Hotel, when it was resolved that Hefford and Co be waited on regarding a conveyance for the band. After a good deal of discussion re catering, it was ultimately agreed that the secretary call for tenders. Engaging the band was also left in the hands of the secretary. It was further decided that a general meeting of butchers be held next Monday evening, at eight o’clock, when all that can are requested to attend, Loyal Benevolent Lodge, —A summoned meeting of the Loyal Benevolent Lodge, 1.0.0.F.M.U, was held last night, to receive the resignation of the P.S, and elect a successor. In recognition of the services rendered to the lodge, the P.S. Bro Strange was presented with a medal. The gift was suitably acknowledged, and Bro Hubbard whs then elected P.S, after which the members adjourned to an adjoining room for refreshments. Appropriate toasts were drunk, and a pleasant evening spent. W KBLKYAN CONFERENCE, DURHAM f-TBBET.—The first business of the Conferr.ice on Saturday morning was the con of the Home Mission fund. The income for the past year was reported as £1367. The expenditure £1529 lie 6d. Balance deficit £153 b l B Bd, A conversation arose upon the unsatisfactory nature of the printed report of the Home Mission for last year, complaint was lodged that the report contained detailed accounts of the Auckland branch of the mission only, while the other parts of the Colony were hardly referred to, and these references contained many errors. It was hoped that a more adequate report would appear in future. A recommendation forwarded from the New Plymouth and Wanganui district, that no estimates of Home Mission income be prepared for the ensuing year, was lost upon tbo voices. It was decided to devote £2OO to the support of a second minister to labor in the suburbs of Dunedin, At the afternoon session the following sums were voted ;—Canterbury Maori Mission, £45 ; Rangiora, for furniture, £25 ; special grant, £25 ; Ashburton, £IOO ; Hokianga. £234 ; Kaipara, £150; Raglan, £194; Kawkapa kapa, £25 ; Mahurangi, £25 ; Wairoa, £6O ; Patea, £SO; Manawatu, £6O, conditionally upon the appointment of a second minister ; Wanganui Maori Mission, £4O; Scandinavian Mission, £SO ; Napier, £25 ; Gisborne, £SO ; Kumara, £SO, conditionally upon the appointment of a minister ; Rer Martin, £SO ; Temuka, £75 ; Port Chalmers, £2O ; Dunedin, £SO, in aid of the parsonage fund. To these amounts some £2OO were added for sundry items, making the total sum about £I9OO. The expenses of the support of students at the Three Kings Institution still remains to be defrayed from this fund.
