FATAL ACCIDENT.
FURTHER PARTICULARS.
A sad accident occurred on Saturday, by which a young girl named Ellen Sullivan, nineteen years of age, lost her life. The poor girl was employed as nursemaid to Mrs G, Beatty, of the Q.C.E. Hotel, and had been to the gardens with four young children, and oarried a baby in her arms. About half-past two o'clock she was approaching the crossing from the footpath to Cathedral square, opposite Hobbs and Go's corner, when two cabs one driven by a man named DeGersy, and the other by 0. Grease—which had been standing on the west side of the square, and had been hailed by some person in front of Warner's Hotel, drove furiously towards the crossing, but before they reached it they cannoned against each other. Crease was the first to get in front, and reached the crossing as the unfortunate girl, who was preceding the children, left the footpath. She saw the danger and tried to retreat, but before she could do so the off shaft of the cab struck her on the shoulder, turned her round, knocked the baby out of her arms, and threw her down, and before the driver could attempt to pull up, one wheel had passed over the right side of her neck and face. Two men named Robert Jacket and John Bennett, who were standing at Hobbs* corner, ran and picked her up. She was breathing very heavily, and the blood was welling from her mouth, and in a few moments she expired in their arms. The right side of her face and her lip was also cut and very much swollen. Oreaße drove to Dr Pewell's house, and returned with that gentleman, but the girl had in the meantime been removed. The cabman was then arrested. With the exception of one leg being slightly bruised, the baby by a miracle escaped further injury. The girl's mother is dead, but her father is said to be working in the Timaru district, where she also had other relations.
