MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, September 13. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunk and Disorderly. —An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined ss. E. J. Wakefield, charged with drunkenness, and who was suffering very much from the effects of drink, was remanded for a week for medical treatment. George Maples, arrested for being drunk and breaking a pane of glass in Mr Whitcombe’s house, Colombo street,was fined 10s and cab-hire, and ordered to pay 20s, value of glass broken. John McFarland, charged with being drunk and creating a disturbance at the bar of the Clarendon Hotel, and also with resisting the arresting constable, was fined 10s. Wm. Wright, for being drunk, was fined 10s. Larceny. —John Lane was charged with stealing a pair of boots from the Warwick Hotel, the property of John Purcell. When arrested, accused said he had purchased the boots from a man in the street, and had pawned them at Stewart’s pawn shop. The prosecutor stated that he was in the Warwick Hotel on Saturday night last, and left a pair of new boots underneath a form in the bar. The boots produced were the same, and accused had no right to have them in his possession, or dispose of them. They were worth 225. Evidence was given by a young man in Stewart’s employ of accused having pawned the pair of boots produced at that shop on Monday morning. In reply to the Bench, accused said he had purchased the boots from a man named Gafney for 6s. His Worship allowed the case to stand over until Thursday, to allow of the police producing the man referred to by accused.
