Mr Bullock kindly officiated as auctioneer, and succeeded in disposing of the various lots at extreme prices. We are glad to learn that the pro ceeds amount to £IOO. Reported Case op Poisoning —Yesterday there was a report current of a case of poisoning ab Kaiapoi. From enquiries made, however, we were unable to obtain any reliable information, further than that the patient was still in a dangerous state, and the supposed poison was sent for analysis to Professor Bickerton, Industrial School.—The following is a return of the inmates of the Burnham Industrial School for July. Number of inmates at date of last return—Males, 50 ; females, 31 ; total, 81. The Lingards.—As we before mentioned arrangements are likely to be made for the appearance of these celebrated artists here shortly, either at the Music Hall or Oddfellows' Hall. It is rumored that Mr Hoskins has taken the latter hall for the purpose of giving a short season with the Lingards, but at present there is no definite information on the subject. We only hope that Mr and Mrs Lingard will not leave New Zealand without having giving Christchurch playgoers an opportunity of seeing them. Dredging at Lyttelton.—Yesterday a number of gentlemen were invited by the Provincial Government to see the dredge Erskine at work. The hopper barge Heathcote was partially filled, and a trip made to to Camp Bay, where the mud was discharged. All present were delighted with the admirable manner in which the dredge and hopper barge were worked, and a number of healths were drank with enthusiasm, including those of the Hon J. T. Peacock, Hawkins and Co, Captain Anderson, Mr Turpin, Mr P. Cunningham, Mr John Ollivier, &c, &c. The party returned to port in time to catch the 4.25 p.m. train to Christchurch. Unique Jewellery.—There is now on view at the shop of Mr Urquhart, jeweller, Colombo street, a splendid collection of jewellery, which is well worth inspection. It comprises some splendid emerald, ruby, diamond, pearl, and sapphire rings, of very pure water, large size, and massive setting, together with pearl, amethyst, turqoise, and carbuncle filagree suites of Indian workmanship in fine gold. A collection of unset stones is also worth notice, comprising many varieties new here, such as yellow and white sapphires, star stones, moon stones, amethysts, &c. All these are very pure, and taken as a whole, the collection is a very fine one. As they will probably not remain on view after to-day, those taking an interest in gems should take the opportunity of inspecting them. Opening op the Northern Saleyards, Kaiapoi.—Mr Joseph Beswick held his opening sale of stock at the saleyards at Monk's Hotel, Kaiapoi, on Thursday, Mr J. G. Hawkes, of Christchurch, acting as auctioneer. There was a large attendance of buyers, and the numerous entries realised capital prices. Previous to the commencement of real business, a substantial lunch was partaken of, the chair being occupied by Mr Moiris Jones, and the vice-chair by Mr Duncan. The toast of " Success to the Northern Saleyards and Mr Beswick," proposed by the chairman, was warmly received, and suitably replied to by Mr Beswick, who said that these sales are to be held every Thursday, and would be a great convenience to farmers and dealers in the district, as it would provide them with a market near home, and do away with the necessity of driving their stock many miles. Theatrical.—The rivalry botweeu the two Dunedin theatres is now upon a more equal footing than during the engagement of Mr Talbot at the Queen's. Mr and Mrs George Darrell have joined the forces of the latter, and opened last evening in " Ay You Like It," with Mrs Darrell as Rosalind, and Mr Darrell as Orlando. Mr Darrell's new piece, " Transported for Life," will be produced during the engagement, and as it is not only a well written play, but one affording every scope for both scenic artist and mechanist, should be a success. They will be followed by Little Nell, the Calif ornian Diamond, now in Auckland, and Mr Dampier, an Australian actor of some repute. The Lingard.?, at date of last advices, were playing Byron's " Not Such a Fool as he Looks," in which Miss Colville enacted a new role, viz,, that of Mrs Mould, technically known as " comic old woman." The Guardian of the 10th, says :—" Miss Colville appeared in quite a new line as Mrs Mould, the old laundress, and she proved herself to be possessed of a greater amount of versatility than even her best admirers gave her credit for. Her representation of the garrulous old dame was exceedingly natural,"

At this meeting the report of the provisional committee will be presented, members enrolled, officers elected, and the club fairly started. Prom the number of names enrolled already as members, the club promises to start very successfully. It is requested that punctuality will be observed, as there is a large amount of business to transact.

Imported Draught Entire.—A splendid addition to our list of Clydesdale entires was made yesterday. By the s.s. Albion arrived a three-year-old horse, imported by Mr Cone, of Rangiora, from Melbourne. This gentleman has certainly Bhown good judgment in his selection, the colt being one of the finest ever landed here. His name is Muir Lad, his sire being Pride of Scotland, the well known Clydesdale entire imported by Mr Nesbitt, better known as Scotch Jock. Muir Lad is a bright bay, with black points. He is very heavy boned, and has four really good legs under him, and in spite of his voyage his action seemed splendid yesterday. He has come over in fine order, having suffered little by the trip, and will be indeed a great addition to our Northern entires. His own brother was sold in Melbourne for 1000 guineas cash, in 1874, and he himself took first prize as a yearling colt at Melbourne, in the same year. We hope Mr Cone will reap a reward for the enterprise he has shown in making this valuable addition to our Canterbury stock. The horse was conveyed last evening safely to Rangiora. A Series of Burglaries.—The Daily Times gives the following particulars of several burglaries which have recently taken place in Dunedin :—" On Sunday night week the residence of Bishop Moran was entered by the front window and a number of articles removed. On the Sunday following an entrance was effected into the house of Mr T. R. Graham, Queen street, and jewellery to the pxtent of £BO stolen therefrom ; and on the same evening the residence of Mrs G. K. Turton, Constitution Hill, was entered (no doubt by the same person or persons) through the bedroom window, and a gold watch and guard carried oil. The adroit manner in which the burglaries had been performed was unmistakeable evidence that they were the work of some practised hand, who had evidently made him self well acquainted with the scenes of his depredations and had chosen a favorable opportunity to successfully carry out his plans. The police on receiving information, quietly set to work to bring the offenders to justice, and the detectives, together with Inspector Mallard, have been on the alert for nights together, but withal so quietly, that outside of the immediate localities where the houses were broken into, no one knew anything of the matter. Their efforts appear to have been successful—at least at half-past ten last evening, Detective Anderson apprehended one Edward Butler, alias Edward Charles Donnolly, in whose possession part of the stolen property from each of the places mentioned was found. Butler is a middleaged man, of medium height, of respectable appearance and quiet demeanour. He was lately a teacher in the Roman Catholic Softool at Cromwell."

Local Industry. —The public will be glad to find that pure soap of good quality is now manufactured in Canterbury. That branded with two stars is known to be genuine.— [A DVT. J
