Blenheim, August 11. At three this morning a fire broke out on the premises in High street belonging to Mr McElwain, opposite Ewart's Hotel. The fire rapidly spread to the adjoining premises of Mr Carter, draper, and thence to the Bank bif New Zealand, which adjoined, and to the National Bank, the next building in the block, though not in the same street, but facing Market square. The fire brigade, with both engines, were quickly on the spot, but their efforts could only serve to preserve buildings that had not ignited. Fortunately there was no wind, else the whole of that part of Blenheim would have gone. As it was, the premises all around were much injured by scorching, breaking of windows, &c. This was the case with the telegraphoffice, and so imminent was the danger at one time, that all the instruments, &c, were removed to the premises of tradesmen. Several lines of wires were burned through, and also the terminal pole was irreparably injured. The department, however, had the instruments refitted, and everything complete by 7.30. The Bank of New Zealand's strong room was all right, and so also was the National Bank's safe. Both Banks opened business this morning in the neighboring premises. The Marlborough limes was just going to press, but the destruction of the premises seemed so certain that the formes were lifted off and carried away, as well as everything portable ; but the fire stopped at the adjoining building, and the ordinary work of getting out the paper was resumed at 6.30, by which time the fire was confined to the burning of the fallen timbers of the several buildings. Blenheim, August 12. The insurances are as follows : McElwain premises, supposed value £7OO, insured in the Victoria for £200; Standard , £2OO. The mortgagee is also insured in the National for £4OO. Carter, building, insured in the Liverpool and London £300; Imperial, £200; stock uninsured. Bank of New Zealand—Building and furniture insured in the Ntw Zealand office for £llOO. National Bank —Building insured in the Norwich Union for £2OO ; in National for £l5O ; furniture also insured in National for £l5O. These premises were all destroyed, but some furniture was saved from both banks, and some stock from Carter's. Ewart's Hotel was insured for about £3OOO in four offices. The loss will be sbout £4OO or £SOO. The cause of the fire is unknown. An inquest will be held. CtßEYmoutii, August 11. The steamer Maori, while being towed out by the Despatch, was slewed by the ebb tide, and got on South Spit. When she touched the tow line slipped from on board. However, she is in a safe position, and will probably get off next tide. Greymouth, August 12. The Maori was got off the Spit this morning, without damage. Dunedin, August 11. The Dunedin firemen are indignant at the refusal of the Wellington men to contest for the Ballarat Cup ; also at the continued reiteration that the cup belongs to the Wellington men. An accident was narrowly escaped yesterday on the Port Chalmers line, a log of wood having been accidentally or purposely placed on the line. It was found just in time to prevent an accident. A large and influential public meeting was held today, to obtain an endowment of funds for the Otago Institute. The following resolutions were carried : —" That steps be taken to procure a vote of £IOOO, for the purchase of fittings and castings for the Museum, and a further sum for current expenses of the Museum after the end of September." " That the time has now arrived when the Otago Museum should be placed on a permanent footing, and for this purpose it is desirable that an endowment of land be set aside for its maintenance." " That the ProvincialjExecutive be requested to recommend to the General Government the votes, and take action to carry the above into effect: and that a committee be appointed to wait upon the Provincial Executive, to urge upon them the desirability of giving tffect to the foregoing resolutions." INVERCARGILL, August 11. At a meeting held last night to consider the action of the Provincial Government in removing Messrs Mitchell and Dundas from the Waste Lands Board; there was a crowded attendance. Resolutions were almost unanimously passed, "That theaction of the Superintendent in issuing warrants for their removal was arbitrary, unjust, uncalled for and an outrage alike upon Mr Mitchell and Mr Dundas and the public." "That the removal of these gentlemen is a serious injury to the the public interests, as showing that members of that Board, which is supposed to have been a non political body, can only hope to retain office by being Biibservient to the Pro vincial Executive of the day." "That the chairman be requested to report the stance to Mr.jor Atkinson with a view to inquiry into the subject.
