Melbourne. —The “Argus” of the 14th inst reports :—ln the import market business continues to present a quiet aspect, and outside flic auction mart there lias been less of a general character done to-day. Flour is moving oil'slowly. Be-t ;,r ,i-ds are held at £l2 6s, and sales of good brands i-. reported at 4312 2s 6d. A* auction a parcel of 10 t<y,.s was sold at £l2. Wheat is steady, but only smaM ales are making at our quotation of 5s 9d ; a o arc el of 'OO bags was taken up at this rate. Oats ait very dull, and there is nothing doing privately. Under the hammer, 3500 bushels were cleared oil, When low and discolored brought 2s Bd. Tasmanian feeding realised 2s lOd to 2s llsd, while New Zealand were quitted at 3S 2d to 3s 3JA. Maize is moving at 4s to a shade under. Sugars have been dealt in to a fair extent at auction. 1065 bags Mauritius were disposed of, when low yellow counters brought £26 5s to £2B ss, and rations £22 5s to £24. 1515 bags Bourbon sugars were at the same time sold at £2O 10sto£24 10s for rations, and £2415s to £26 15s for counters. The Helen M. Blade, from Mauritius, announced yesterday, does not appear to have reached the bay yet, and at a late hour this altornoon the consignees of the cargo had not received their letters. Last week we published telegraphic, information from Port Louis by the mail, to about the 30th April; and by two successive arrivals at Adelaide, viz, the Hannah Nicholson and Wild Wave, circulars hav 1 been received to 4th May, hut the only additional information we have to give is, that of three vessels which sailed file same day for that port, the Eudora alone still remains out. The Inaza, 400 tons, has been chartered for Port Phillip Heads ; and the Obcona, 275 tons, for Dunedin. We understand that the cargo of the Nellie 51. Slade will be offered for sale on Friday. Of teas, we note the quittance publicly of 050 half-chests congous at 10-*d to Is lid, while 400 boxes 8.0. pekoe were placed at is 4}d, and new Macao leas realised is Ud to Is 5Jd. Candles are i.i considerable favor. 450 boxes were sold by auction at 9jd for Goudas, and 10(1 for D.H.O.’s, while faulty sold at 9Jd to 9Jd. Privately business is still pending in Imported brands. In Victorian made candles a most extensive business has been carried through. We understand that the manager of the Apollo Company has entered into contract with the large wholesale buyers to the extent ot 10,000 boxes at least (and some say considerably over this) for forward delivery, over a period, at 8-Jd. A line of 150 cases of lib salmon has been taken up at a full price. In liquids we note the disposal publicly of 780 cases O’Brien’s dagger stout at an improved rate of 8s 35(1. Adelaide. —The “Observer” of the 10th reports : Another very dull week has to be chronicled, Before the arrival of the mail traders declined to operate until they knew what the advices were. Now the mail has arrived there seems to be no greater inclination to do business- The prices in England at the date ot the last Telegrams, May 9th and 10th, were too low to encourage orders being sent. The quotations in London were dull at 50s to sls per quarter —much too low it vvill be seen to induce buyers paying 4s 9d here with nil the expenses and risks of shipment home. The effect of the advices, therefore, has been to depress the market. Last week sales were made at about 4s lOd per bushel f.o.b, but this week transactions have teen closed at fully a penny lower, and buyers are not offering as much as 4s 9d now. Wo quote the market as dull at 4s to 4s 9d per bushel f.o.b, at Port Adelaide. Flour, too, is qu'et; For country brands buyers are offering £lO, but sellers ask £lO 6s per ton; town brands ar - e worth from CIO 17s Gd to £li per ton. Bran has been sold at Is 4d to Is 4-ld per bushel in parcels, but tor small lots Is 5d is asked. Pollard is quoted at Is 6d per bushel. For oats there has been a fair demand. Earley is without alteration. The shipments of wheat and Hour for the week ending June 3rd reached 3033 tons, bringing up the total exportation for the year to 129.255 tons. The following telegram, dated June 14th, appears in the “Argus” : —Wheat is wanted at4s9d. The charter of the Calezell and Star of Erin, at 40s for orders, has hardened the market.
