A brigantine was signalled this morning from the North. The steamer Arawa-a arrived this morning at 7.40 am. She sails for Wellington and Nelson this afternoon. '■ The Matau arrived in harbor last night, sails on return trip to-night. The Hadda, with a cargo of coals from Newcastle, arrived yesterday evening. The Beautiful Star arrived at 7.30 a m today. The English vessels are using all possible despatch in discharging. The Desdciiiona is putting out steadily at the rate of 150 tons per day, and the Ann Armitage is also doing good work. On May 4th, the barque Obeona was loading at the Mauritius, with a cargo of sugar, for New Zealand. The brigantine Enterprise, Captain Holmes, arrived in harbor on Monday evening. Was berthed at Screw Pile Jetty, and Jailed South last night. 4Jfrhe three-masted schooner Fairlle (says an Auck. land paper) left Auckland for Lyttelton via the Thames. She would load with timber at the latter port. The barque Natal Queen left Auckland for Newcastle, in ballast, on the 19th. From papers to hand by the mail, we learn that cur old friend Captain Wm Ashby is about to resign his appointment of Marine Superintendent ot the New Zealand Shipping Company, after a connection l -with the Company of a little over three years. Cap- [ tain Ashby superintended the building of thcComrTpany’s fleet, and now that that Is on a sound footing, V his work is finished. It is Captain Ashby’s intenV tlonto travel on the Continent with his wife fora I fewmonths. We should not be at all surprised to 1 see them out this way once more, where they would meat with a hearty welcome from the many friends they made during their visits to this port We observe that Captain Ashby has supplied the '-'“lllustrated London News’’with two very good sketches of the Crozet Islands, where the Strathmore was wrecked.
