FEARFUL SUFFERINGS AT SEA.

Four survivors of the crew of the French brigantine Elise Prosper, of Cherbourg, have been brought to Liverpool by the steamer Vanguard, having been picked up in the Atlantic in an open boat. She sprang a leak iu consequence of the heavy weather on the 27th January. On the morning of the 29th she was waterlogged, and the master and the crew, seven all told, accordingly got into the boat, taking with them the log book and ship’s papers, but no provisions or water. About 10 o’clock p.m. on the 31st, the wind and sea having increased, a wave dashed over the boat, carrying away the master and man at the helm. A plank and oar were thrown out to them, but, although they got hold of them, the unfortunate men were unable to keep afloat long enough to

be reached, and were drowned on the night between the 2nd and 3rd of February, me ■boy died from exposure and starvation, his body being quite blue from the effects of the saltwater. It was thrown into the sea. Here, then, were four men left, and two of them were reduced almost to a state of insensibility. On the evening of the ninth day after leaving the water-logged brigantine the mate, who was the only one able to move, sighted the lights of a steamer heading for them, and, gathering all his energies, shouted for help when she got within speaking distance. His cries were heard, and the unfortunate men were taken on board the steamer, which proved to be the Vanguard, and on board or which they received the most assiduous attention. The mate says they were eight days without a morsel of food.
