STRANGE INCIDENT.
Natural history furnishes relations of many strange intimacies between animals of opposite kinds, but we (Southland Times) do not remember having read or heard of anything stranger than an incident which has recently come under our notice, namely, a cat and a lat being scon playing together in the most friendly and familiar manner. Mr Fraser, governor of the Invercargill gaol, has a cowshed at some distance from the gaol, and there are great numbers of rats about it. A good many months ago, a stray kitten came to the shed, and was encouraged to remain there by being fed regularly at milking time. It did remain, it grew to be a large-sized cat, became an excellent rat-killer, and was valued accordingly. However, the other morning, while Mr Fraser himself happened to he at ihc cowshed, an enormously large rat was seen to come out of its hole, and the cat, which was close by, placed himself in a position to spring upon his prey. However, 1 e did not do so, but the rat, after looking about it for a time approached the cat, which made no hostile movement, and began smelling at it. More than this, the two animals began to play with each other, and continued to do so in a mutually delighted manner, until the rat, startled by the onlookers, returned to its burrow.
