St Luke's Church.— The Rev E. A. Lingard advertises for information from those who may have put money into either of the alms-boxes at St Luke's Church since the Ist hist.

Justices of the Peace. —The following gentlemen in Canterbury have been ap pointed Justices of the Peace for the colony, viz:—Messrs A. Broadfoot, Christchurch; W. Deamer, Christchurch ; S. Hey wood, Fernside ; J. R. Lysaght, Christchurch ; O. G. Parker, Malvern; J. A. Phillips, Rakaia; W. Postletbwaite, Raukapuka; D. H. Potts, Upper Ashburton ; D. Sladden, Oxford.

University Junior Scholarships.—lt is notified that the examination for junior scholarships will commence on 23rd May next. Intending competitors must send in their names, and the subjects in which they intend to ompete, so as to reach the Obancolor’s office not later than 30th April next,

Amalgamated Society op Carpenters and Joiners. —The closing meeting of the quarter was held at the Central hotel on Tuesday evening. The Christchurch branch has determined to celebrate the com nletion of the first year of its existence by h fidiug a picnic at Sumner, the final arrangements for the same being left to the committee to be duly advertised, The following ?ife officers for the present quarter:—Presi flout, J. Newcombe; sick steward, W. Knight; auditors, Messrs Croft and Hatchard, Calcutta Sweep. —A Calcutta Sweep on the Dunedin Cup was drawn at Warner’s Commercial Hotel last evening. The horses Fetched the following prices :—Right Bower, £4 ; Seabird, £2 10s ; Fishhook, £lO ; Cloth of Gold, £2; Tattler, £l4; Amohia, £3; Kory O’More, £6 ; Punga were were, £8 ; Templeton, £2; King Philip, £9 ; Korari, £2 10s ; Daniel O’Rourke, £6 ; Sir William, £1 10s ; Merry Monarch, £3 ; Tadmor, £(j; Guy Fawkes, £5 ; Game Cock, £4. Value of sweep, £94 ss. Accident. —A man whose name is Joseph Ferguson was brought down from Alford Forest to the Ashburton Immigration Barracks on Sunday last with a broken leg. It seems that he was at work the day previous carting wheat to stacks on Mr Stevenson’s farm, and while unloading a dray on to a rick the horse took fright and bolted. Ferguson jumped off the load, when one of the wheels of the dray passed over the end of a rail lying on the ground, and caused it to spring up and strikt Ferguson’s left leg below the knee, and fractured it. He is progressing favourably under Dr Trevor’s care. Amateur Athletic Club —A general meeting of the members of the Araateui Athletic Club was he d last evening at halfpast 7 o’clock at Warner’s Commercial Hotel. Mr J. W. Davis presided. The following new members were elected by ballot: —Messrs J Fowler, J. G. Restell, A. M. Webb, Buchanan, E. C. O’Connal, W. M. Ollivier. J. Ballantine, and J. L, b'carvell. Mr T. Gordon moved—- “ That the following resolution, passed at the last general meeting, bo rescinded : —‘ That all runners la the yariqus events, not hand!-

caps, of this club, be subject to the following penalties for each time of winning, such event to include the last sports—loo yards, 1 yard ; 200 yards, 2 yards; 440 yards, 5 yards ; 880 yards, 10 yards ; 1760 yards, 20 yards ; high jump, 1 inch ; long jump, 3 inches.’” Mr Hawkes seconded the motion, which alter a slight discussion was carried by 10to 4. Mr T. Gordon moved—“ That in those events where a special prize was offered there be a second prize,” Mr Black seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The secretary, Mr Tossvvill moved —“ That a committee be appointed to select the prizes.” Mr Hartland seconded the motion. Mr T. Gordon moved as an amendment—“ That all prizetakers at the forthcoming sports be allowed to choose their own trophies.” Mr MoCardell secon ed the amendment.
