The chairman announced that the directors were not opposed to stopping all operations until a competent manager, both chemical and practical, was obtained, as was resolved by the Dunedin shareholders. Mr Chew recommended that the works should be stopped until the directors had air opportunity of examining into the new methods of working. He admitted that to make this experiment would waste two thousand pounds, and if the new methods failed, he recommended that that whole affair should be stopped altogether. In reviewing the work of the past two years, he said their great difficulty had been fue l . They had calculated to get charcoal at 3d per bushel, and ultimately had to manufacture it themselves at Is 7-jjd, but even if they had fuel, the present process was useless.
