Heathcote Regatta, —A meeting of the committee of the above will be helvi this evening at Warner’s Hotel, at 8 p.m., to settle the affairs of the recent regatta. Registration at Sea, —The instructions of the Board of Trade relative to particulars to be registered by the captain of a ship concerning births and deaths at sea are published in the New Zealand Gazette. Dunedin Races. —The N.Z.S.S. Go’s s.s. Wellington will leave for Dunedin on Thursday the Kith instant. Passenger tickets will be issued by the agent, Mr George Mackay, at reduced rates, available for return by s.s. Taranaki after the races. Lecture. —The Kev B. Backhouse delivered a lecture on Madagascar last evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall, when there was a good attendance. Mr John Inglis occupied the chair, and the lecture was interspersed with views, &c., exhibited by means of the oxyhydrogen light. Amateur Athletic Club,-A general meeting of the members will be held on Tuesday, 21st instant, at 7.30 p.m., at Warner’s Commercial Hotel, to receive entries for the forthcoming sports, and on other important business. Cathedral Guild.—A general meeting of the members of the Guild will be held this evening at the College Library, when readings will be given by Rev J. W. Stack and Mr E. A. Worthy. During the evening a very choice programme of music will be rendered by the choir. British and Foreign Bible Society, Kaiapol— On Thursday the Rev B. Backhouse delivered a lecture on “ Burmah” in the Wesleyan Chapel, the Rev W, H. Beck presiding. There was a full attendance, and the lecture was listened to with interest. At its c’ose a committee was formed to promote the objects of the British and Foreign Bible Society in the town and district. Racecourse and Southbridge Rail WAY. —It is notified in the New Zealand Gazette that the memorial plan of the lands taken for the purposes of the branch line of railway from Racecourse to Southbridge, has been deposited in the office of the Registrar of Deeds at Christchurch, in accordance with the Immigration and Public Works Act, 1872. Registration op Votes— We remind those entitled to have their names placed on the Electoral Roll for the next year, that claims must be sent in by the end of the present month, Mr Buck, who did good service last year in placing names, on the roll, will fill up claims, &c, and has opened an office at the chambers of the Licensed Victuallers' Gazette, Hereford street. Canterbury College. —At the meeting of the Board of Governors, held yesterday, it was determined to continue the engagement of the lecturers in modern languages and jurisprudence (Rev 0, Turredl and Dr Foster) for the present term. The Hon John Hall was unanimously elected a Governor, in room of Rev James Buller, resigned, and the seat of Mr R. Wilkin declared vacant by resignation. Supreme Court. —His Honor Mr Justice Johnston sat in Bankruptcy yesterday, at 11 a.ra. In the following case the final order was granted, viz Charles Brown. The final orders in Fraser and Brown were suspended, the former for six months, and the latter for two years from date. In the cases of Joseph Carder and Wm. Iverach, an adjournment was made until April 26th.

Clerk to Licensing Court. —lt is notified in the Gazette that Mr W. G. Walker has been appointed clerk of the Licensing Courts of Avon, Riccarton, City of Christchurch N.W., City of Christchurch S.W,, City of Christchurch N.E., City of Christchurch S.E., Heathcote, Springs, Lincoln, Halswell, Spreydon, Templeton, Courtenay, South Malvern, East Malvern, Malvern,' Upper Waimakariri, Lake Coleridge, Rakaia, and Ellesmere,

Agricultural Statistics of Taranaki. —The agricultural statistics of the Province of Taranaki, taken in February, 1876, are published in the New Zealand Gazette. The totals are—wheat, 13,487 bushels, being a decrease of 3372 bushels on the returns for 1875; oats, 21,595, being an increase of 9293 bushels on the returns for 1875; barley, 430 bushels, being an increase of 350 on those of last year; and potatoes, 2106 tons, being an increase of 337 tons on the returns of 1875. Scientific Lectures.— A. series of six lectures on scientific subjects will be delivered in the Oddfellows’ Hall, by Professor Bickerton and Dr Powell, of the Canterbury College. The first lecture will be delivered on Thursday, March 16th— 41 Electricity and its appliance to submarine cables.” Thursday, March 30th— 44 A blood globule and its wanderings.” Thursday, April 13th—“ The hidden wealth of a lump of coal.” Thursday, April 27th— “ The structure and functions of the human eye.” Thursday, May 11th—“A drop of water.” Thursday, May 25th—“ Parasites, animal and vegetable.”

Board of Conservators. —A meeting of the Waimakariri Board of Conservators was held yesterday, at noon, at the City Conncil Chambers. Present: Messrs J. N. Tosswill (in the chair). J. T. Fisher, and the Mayor of Christchurch, The overseer’s report on the state of the river was very satisfactory. The Mayor reported for the chairman, Mr Harman, who was unavoidably absent, that a sum of £IOO had been invested in City Council debentures, by way of sinking fund, which investment had been approved by his Honor the Superintendent, He also reported that an abstract of accounts had been prepared, and, as soon as the accounts were audited, would be printed. The Board then adjourned. The College Buildings —Again has the appeal of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College to builders, &c, for tenders been productive of no result, the whole of the tenders sent in for the erection of the College proper, being over the amount of money at their disposal. They have however determined upon building the laboratory, which is of wood and iron, and a tender for its erection has been accepted. The question of the erection of the College proper has been remitted to the building committee, to see if arrangements cannot be made either for brick or concrete, or brick, concrete, and stone combined, if it is found that all stone is too expensive.

Little River Races. —The Consolation Handicap was won by Mr J. Brown’s Maid of the Mount, and the Maori race, in which eight horses started, was won by Irai Tihau’s Ritoka. This concluded Thursday’s racing. On Friday morning two matches were run off, the first for £lO a side, distance 2 miles, between Mr B. Shadbolt’s Miss Flirt, Bst 71b, and Mr Birdling’s Dick, 9st 6lb; this was won by Miss Flirt, after a close contest. The second match for £lO a side, 2 miles, over eight flights of hurdles, was between Mr Cradock’s g m Phantom, 10st 71b, and Mr B. Shadbolt’s g g Noble, 9st 61b ; this was won easily by Phantom. After this a Hack Hurdle race took place, in which six started, and after a good race was won by Lunatic, Old Brown Stout being second. This con eluded the sports. After adjourning to Mr G. Frank’s the stakes were paid over, and after all expenses are paid, the Peninsula Racing Club will have upwards of £3O in hand towards next year’s races.

Ellesmere Cricket Club .—A committee meeting was held at Spring’s Southbridge Hotel on March 11th. Present: Messrs C. A. Fitzroy (in the chair), T. Acland, B. B. Willis, C. F. Williams, and J. Lewis. The following resolutions were adopted : —“ That, in the opinion of the meeting, it is not desirable to change the site of the cricket ground ; but that, if possible, more definite arrangements be made with the owner and lessee for the continuance of the paddock hitherto used and for an extension of the present lease. That, with reference to the above resolution, the chairman and Mr Lewis be deputed to wait on Mr Smith, and report at as early a date as possible. That life members’ tickets be sold for the sum of ten guineas, with the option of payment in two instalments—five guineas at the time and balance within three years from the date of the first payment.” A vote of thanks was then passed to the chairman, and themeeting adjourned. The Drainage Board. —Yesterday at the weekly meeting of the Christchurch District Drainage Board, the chairman reported that the debentures had been duly issued and handed over to the Bank of New Zealand for transmission to London. A preliminary report from the engineer, Mr Bell, as to the best means for temporarily draining the southern and eastern portion of the district, so as to carry off the storm water, was read. It was resolved to engage for the use the Board the offices in Hereford street, lately occupied by the New Zealand Shipping Company, and the chairman and Mr Harman were authorised to make the necessary arrangements for furniture. The chair man also stated that by his direction a letter had been addressed to the Provincial G. vernment, asking that the unappropriated balance of £SOOO might be handed over to the Drainage Board to be devoted to the efficient drainage of the railway station and adjacent lands, and upon the motion of Cr Jones it was resolved—“ That the chairman and Messrs Duncan and Wright be a deputation to wait upon the Government to urge upon them their concurrence in the course suggested in the letter referred to.”
