CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A mooting of the Board of Governors was held at the Public Library at .3 p.m. yesterday, Present —Mr W. Montgomery (chairman), Rev C. Fraser, You Archdeacon Willock, Dr Turnbull, Messrs Mellish, Potts, Webb, Veel, Tosswill, H. B. G-resson, Inglis, and Stevens. The chairman said he had waited on Hon Mr Bowen with respect to the sanctioning of the estimates of the College. Mr Bowen, after having read the memo, of the Provincial Secretary, said that of course the Government would not take over any new appointments or estimates which had not been passed by the Provincial Government, He (the chairman) had waited upon the Provincial Secretary, and he might say that his impression was, that the Government would allow of the two lecturers being appointed. No steps had been taken by the Provincial Government with regard to the appointment of a lecturer or professor on geology, but the Hon Mr Bowen had given him to understand

that the General Government would probably accede to the request of the College, and accept the estimates. In accordance with the recommendation of the committee, the architect had been requested to advertise for tenders for the new College building, and three tenders had been received. The election of a governor in the room of the Rev James Buller was then proceeded with. The Hon John Hall was the only candidate, and on the ballot he was declared duly elected. The Board then proceeded to consider the tenders for the erection of new College buildings. After some discussion, Mr Webb moved—- “ That the tender of Mr T. H. Kerr for the laboratory for £2347 18s 6d be accepted by the Board.” Mr Tosswill seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Webb moved—“ That the committee arrange with Mr Kerr as to the time in which the laboratory buildings are to be completed, and that the chairman be requested to affix the seal of the College to the contract, provided that satisfactory arrangements be made with the contractor as to time.” Mr H. B. Gresson seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The tenders for the erection of the College buildings all being too high, The Rev C. Fraser moved— 44 That the matter be remitted to the building com* mittee to arrange, if practicable, with a contractor for the College plans, so as to bring the matter within the limits of the vote.” Mr Gresson seconded the motion, which was agreed to, Mr Mellish moved—“ That the building committee be empowered to arrange for the erection of the building in concrete, failing being able to erect it in stone, for the amount of the vote.” Yen Archdeacon Willock seconded the motion. Dr Turnbull moved the addition of the words “or brick” after the word 41 concrete.” Mr Tosswill seconded the amendment, which was agreed to. On the motion of Mr Mellish, the resolution was finally amended as follows 44 That the building committee be empowered to arrange for the erection of the building in concrete or brick, or a combination of brick and concrete and stone, failing being able to erect it in stone.” Rev G. Fraser moved—“ That the chairman be empowered to affix the sea l of the Board to such contract as may be approved by the committee in terms of the former resolution.” Mr Inglis seconded the motion, which was carried. On the motion of Dr Tnrnbull the name of Mr Mellish was added to the building committee. The Board then proceeded to consider the question of the appointment of the lecturers on modern languages and jurisprudence for the ensuing terms. Mr Veel moved— 44 That the chairman be authorised to arrange with the lecturers in jurisprudence and modern languages for one term on the same scale of remuneration as that paid last session.” Dr Turnbull seconded the motion which was agreed to. Regarding the matter of a professor or lecturer in geology, Rev 0. Fraser moved— 44 That the College committee be instructed to take such action as may be found needful for securing the appointment of a professor or lecturer on geology." Mr Tosswill seconded the motion. Mr Veel spoke in opposition to the resolution. Mr E. 0. J. Stevens moved as an amendment— 44 That the question of the erection of a chair of geology be made the subject of a special meeting, to be called at an early date.” The Yen Archdeacon Willock seconded the amendment. The chairman’s attention at this stage was called to the fact that there was no quorum, and the meeting adjourned.
