Thomas Bowes The ewe fair came off, as notified, yesterday, The attendance was very limited, but several sales were effected which were more or less satisfactory to breeders. The cata* logued number of ewes were veryjsmall, but several auctioneers improved the occasion by offering several other important lots: The following are the particulars of the various transactions;—
Mr Aikman, who sold for Mr Wilkin, offered six Lincoln ewes imported per Calypso, bred by Mr Mackinder of Lincolnshire, which were sold to Mr Coe: at 20 guineas each. These sheep are splendid animals. A lot of thirty-five two-tooth Lincolns, bred by imported rams, the property of Mr Cathcart Wason, of Cor war, were sold to Mr Conway at £1 each, and a very cheap bargain they were. Mr J. Matson then officiated, commencing with some Leicesters and Lincoln Leicesters of Mr Maydwell’s. The first twp or three lots were passed in at the reserve figure, but Mr Conway again succeeded in obtaining five Leicester ewe lambs at 2 guineas, ahd one Lincoln-Leicester at 3 guineas. Mr Matson then offered a lot of his own breeding with the following results:—Sixteen twotooth down ewes, at £1 Is each, to Mr B. Wilkin ; seven Leicester two-tooth ewes, at £1 6s, to Mr W. Jeffrey; six LincolnLeicester ewes, at 2 guineas, to Mr Perham; 7 Lincoln-Leicester ewes, at 15s 9d to Mr Morris Jones; 2 Leicester ewes, to Mr W. Jeffrey, at 10s; and eight Lincoln-Leicesters at 17s 6d to the same gentleman ; forty-one Leicester ewes, at 17s fid, to Mr Dowding, of Coldstream. On account of Messrs Digby and Hebden, Mr Matson then offered two Leicester rams, which, after a spirited competition, were knocked down to Mr Le Lievre, of Akaroa, at 3 guineas each. Mr Matson also sold sixteen Southdown ewes, in grand condition, to Mr 8,-Wilkin, at £ 1 each. Another lot of the same fetched from 10s fid to 17s fid. We understand that Mr Matson has also disposed of two more of Mr Lysaght’s imported rams, one being purchased by Mr Gerkin at 55 guineas, and the other to Mr S. Nutt at £4B. We wish here to correct an error in our report of tbe ram fair of the preceding day. The ten Leicester ram lambs by Charmion, and bred by l£r Matson, were reported as having been passed in. They were, however, purchased by Mr Arthur Dobson at 5 guineas each, which was the highest price obtained upon the ground for ram lambs during the day. Mr Matson also submitted yesterday two pens of two-tooth Leicester ewes, of his own breeding, by Young Scotland, and these were passed in at 16 guineas each, and two other lots of twelve Leicester ewe lambs by Charmion, were passed in at 12 guineas each. Mr B. Mitchell sold some Romney Marsh rams at £1 each, but as the attendance was becoming somewhat limited, and in view of his approaching sale of Every McLean’s young rams, he soon relinquished the hammer, which brought the proceedings to a termination.
