A rather important point was decided yesterday in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Edwards, Bennett and Co sued Clement Wilson to recover £: 3 18s 8d on a dishonored bill of exchange. On the case being called oa Mr Cowlishaw said that defendant had filed a declaration under The Debtors’ and Creditors' Act, which had the effect of staying all proceedings. Mr O’Neil who appeared for plaintiffs, contended that such filing only protected the property and not the person of the debtor. It was proposed and carried that a letter be written to LieutColonel Packe, requesting his permission for the Association to use the rifle range at the Easter meeting. It was reported that his Honor the Superintendent had forwarded a cheque of £2 2s as a prize in one of the matches ; also, that the Licensed Victuallers would give prizes to be competed for at a special competition at such ranges as the Council should decide. A discussion then took place as to granting range prizes in such matches as extend over more than one range, and it was ultimately decided to do so, thus securing a prize to the highest scorer at any range in such matches. Several offers of gifts from tradesmen were mentioned, and it was decided that members should, as far as possible, make a canvass of the merchants and shopkeepers, to augment the number already promised. The programme was then carefully considered, and now stands as follows; President’s prize, at 300 yards ; Civilians’ Cup; Association’s Cup; Challenge Cup, value fifty guineas, and gold medal; International Match ; Mayor’s Cup ; Boys’ Match; All Comers’ Cup ; Aggregate Scorer’s Prize ; Companies’ Match ; and Licensed Victuallers’ prize. All the prizes are enhanced in value compared with previous years, and in some matches an additional prize has been added. The chairman desired the members of Council to get as many additional subscribers and gifts as possible, prior to the nest meeting, to be held on Monday, the 28th instant.
