Dr Hector has just sent out to the botanical gardens a case of struck cuttings of the cork oak, procured with difficulty from Kew gardens. It is believed that the climate of New Zealand is well adapted to growth of this valuable tree. Sir J. Vogel brought them out in the Somersetshire. They are bedded out in the botanical gardens. The cable steamers Hibernia and Duke of Edinburgh are now lying at anchor. They report fine weather, and no mishap throughout. About sixty miles from the landing place the cable was cut and buoyed, and the steamers sail this afternoon, for Schroder’s
Mistake, when, weather permitting, they will at once commence paying out the shore end, which is very heavy, weighing ten tons to the mile. They hope to complete the connection within fourteen hours after starting. The Lady Barkly and Tui are still away, the latter having Dr Lemon and Mr Shapley on board. The town is crowded with people from the country and Christchurch. The sweeps drawn last night give the following as the probable winners of the events to-day. Maiden Plate —3 to lon Pungawerewere. Hurdle Pace— Theodore, as Tommy Dodd is not likely to go for it, as far as can be ascertained. If Tommy goes of course he’s almost a moral. South Canterbury Handicap— Cloth of Gold. Novel Race— Madras is fancied. The weather is cool and looks like rain. The course, though hard, is in good going order. A goodly number of the “talent” are here.
Mr Hoskins opened to a splendid house last night. Miss Colville had quite an orvation on appearing.
