COLOMBO ROAD DISTRICT SCHOOL.

The third annual treat to the scholars of this one of the principal schools of the province took place on Saturday last in the grounds of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, kindly placed at the disposal of the committee by the Association. There were present upwards of 630 children under their respective teachers, and a large number of old scholars, together with several visitors, including Mr J. P, Restell, Inspector of Schools, and several of the parents This proves the interest felt in the welfare of the school. Refreshments were served by the school committee, assisted by the stiff of teachers, during the day. In this school, we may remaik, the sexes being kept quite, apart, the annual treat is about the only opportunity the scholars have of mixing together, and for this reason they seemed, most th-. -

roughly to enjoy themselves. Races for prizes and games were kept up until 5 p.m, when the children of the infant department were dismissed to their homes, and the girls under the head mistress and the boys under the head master returned to their respective schoolrooms, which were nicely decorated with flowers, &c. A large portion of the cut flowers were the gift of Mr W. Wilson. The prizes to the girls were distributed by Lady Wilson, who previous to presenting them, paid the girls a well deserved compliment for their neat appearance, and also expressed her intention of giving four prizes, which she had brought with her, for good conduct. She hoped they would enjoy their holidays, and would take an opportunity of coming to the school to see them at their studies. The chairman thanked Lady Wilson for her presence at the schoolroom, and also for her handsome prizes. Two recitations having been given, the National Anthem was sung, and the visitors separated. The prizes to the boys were distributed by Sir Cracroft Wilson, Mr Restell and several other visitors being also present. Sir Cracroft having expressed the pleasure he felt at being present, presented among the others two prizes for good conduct, and also one given by Mr Harman for proficiency in gymnastics. After the prizes had been distributed three cheers were given for Sir Cracroft, and also for Mr Restell, and the boys dispersed to their homes. The day's proceedings were brought to a close by a soiree held in the schoolroom, in which the masters, mistresses, and pupil teachers took part, some of the elder scholars being also present. Opportunity was taken by the female teachers to make a presentation to Mrs Bowmaker, accompanied by an address, expressing their appreciation of her kindness and gratitude for the interest shown by her in their work.
