CHRISTCHURCH WEST SCHOOLS.

The annual distribution of prizes took place last Friday on the occasion of the breaking up for the Christmas holidays. In the absence of the chairman of the school committee, Professor Bickerton, by request, kindly consented to act as distributor. The Professor, before proceeding with the presentation, delivered an interesting address. He exhorted thrm to be diligent, in their youth; the season in wh'cb, by mental culture, they were to lay upastoie of knowledge that would rapidly double and redouble itself. He then showed them the immense advantages of a good education ; how the man whose education had been neglected was compelled to do the hardest manual labor, and could thereby earn in a week only as much as the man of cultivated intellect could in a day. He reminded them also that it is not always the cleverest boys who get the prizes, but those who are the most industrious at their studies; that the man with moderate abilities and plenty of perseverance soon outstripped another who was clever but afflicted with laziness. He hoped that they would continue to take an interest in their education, and that ere long he would find some of their names on the roll of the Canterbury College as matriculated students of the New Zealand University. Miss Brittan had as yet been with them but a very short time ; nevertheless, he felt it his duty to confess that in that short period his estimation and regard for their head mistress had daily increased, and he was highly pleased to find that the girls had shown their appreciation of her labors by subscribing amongst themselves and presenting her with a gold locket. Professor Bickerton then intimated that the vacatiou would last six weeks, the school re-opening on Monday, the 24th of January, 1876. The proceedings were terminated by three hearty cheers for the Professor.
