It is a well ascertained fact that housewives are seldom out of temper on a washing day, if they get well on with their work. But if they have obtained inferior soap, and their hands are chafed therewith, there is generally a late tea, and the fireside is not pleasant until the children are got to repose. When purchasing soap, if you ask for the star brand, and see that you get it, there will be no fear of late washing or chapped hands, as the greatest care is taken when it is being manufactured to render it free from all injurious properties. Besides, it is the best, the bars are the largest, and it is the cheapest soap in the market. Try, and you will be convinced. [Advt.] Lyttelton Dramatic Society. This society held a meetiug at the Colonists’ Hall on Wednesday night. There was a fair attendance, the Mayor occupying the chair. It was determined that an entertainment should be given on the 12th November, at the Colonists’ Hall, consisting of a dramatic scene, musical interlude, and farce, the proceeds to be used in liquidating the debt incurred by the club in procuring a wardrobe. Some other routine business having been transacted, the meeting adjourned. Volunteer Inspection. The usual monthly inspection of the head-quarters companies by the colonel commanding the district took place last evening at the drill shed. The companies present were the artillery, engineers, city guards, and cadets. The newly formed engineer’s band was also present for the first time, and played at intervals, looking very well in their new unifoim. After the inspection the men were put through company drill. The companies subsequently marched through a portion of the city paraded by the band, and on returning to the shed were dismissed.
