Mr Hugh Carlton has declared in favour of separation of the islands, and he will probably be a candidate at the next election on those views. A boy, throwing stones, struck another behind his ear, and knocked him senseless, but he is not dangerously injured. The cook of a coasting steamer alongside the wharf fell overboard at ten o’clock last night. A fireman jumped in after him and rescued him, The alterations to the steamer Wellington are very extensive, and make a complete change in her appearance and in the speed of the vessel. The new boiler weighs 25 tons. The superintendent of the work, on behalf of the Shipping Company, speaks most favourably of the officials here for doing such work, and says it has been done cheaper and quicker than it would have been in Sydney, Wellington, October 22. The Albion arrived at ten o’clock last night. She goes South on Sunday. Dunedin, October 22. Produce quotations —Flour, £lO 10s ; oatmeal, £ls ; bran, £4 10s ; potatoes, £4; wheat, 3s 0d to 4s 3d; butter, Is 3d to Is 6d; cheese, lid to Is per lb. A fire in Moray place last night destroyed the .Rubber Stamp Company’s shop and a plumber’s shop. The fire did not spread, being hemmed in on both sides by brick
houses. The insurances were—Mr Webb, on his stock, in the New Zealand office, £700; Standard, £4OO. The Stamp Company estimate their loss at £6OO. They were uninsured. Auckland, Oct. 21. Father Hickey, who visited the colony six ago, collecting subscriptions for churches in Ireland, is expected to be Bishop CrokeV huccessor in the Catholic Bishopric ol Auckland. The alterations to the steamer Wellington are completed. The cost will be about six thousand pounds. The vessel is expected to attain a speed of twelve knots. She is finished in very superior style. Kirby has been committed to trial on a charge of indecent assault. Nelson, Oct. 21. The chief officer of the Chile, who was charged with larceny, was discharged this morning, it being proved that the jewellery he had sold was picked up by him in the hold in the presence of two witnesses.
