Abolition Meeting at Little Rivek. —A well attended meeting of the electors of Little River was held on Wednnsday evening, in the library, to consider the question of the abolition of the provinces. Mr A. D. Allan presided. It was resolved unanimously, on the motion of Mr A. Joblin, seconded by Mr W. Coop—" That this meeting is of opinion that the Bill brought down by the General Government for the abolition of provinces will be advantageous to the colony at large, and believes that no good object will, be gained by delay in carrying its measures into effect." The chairman was requested to forward a copy of the resolution to the hon E. W. Stafford. A vote of thanks having been passed to the library committee for calling the meeting, a vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. Fibe in Timabu.—A fire occurred in Timaru 6tx Friday morning, by which four Shops were destroyed. The locality of the fire was in a block of buildings on the Great South road, between Mr Cullman's bakery and Mr Bowker's shop. It originated in Mr Bickerstaff's building. The fire g<>t such a hold that the shops belonging to Messrs Webster, Kedfern, Bickerstaff, and Beadman were destroyed. Three of them belonged to Mr Bowker, and were insured, and the other belonged to Mr Webster. He had an insurance over his building and stock of £BOO, but his stock alone was worth £llOO. Mr Redfern's stock, which was worth £4OO, was uninsured. He only succeeded in saving a very lew articles of his stock. Mr Beadman only had a small stock, and everything was burned. None of Mr Bickerstaff's stock was saved. He had effected an insurance on his goods in July last. The Apothecaries' Hall of Ireland has had to pay £ISOO as compensation to the family of a man who was killed through the explosion of some sulphide of antimony sold by the hall in mistake for oxide of manganese. In consequence of the great diminution in the number of elephants in Ceylon, owing to the wholesale and wanton destruction of these useful and intelligent animals, the Governor, with the full concurrence of the Secretary of State, has stopped the issue of licences to shoot and capture them. A great want is now felt in the island of the assistance of elephants in constructing public works. NOTICE OF REMOVAL.
