SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
E&ST OnRISTOHURCH. The committee of the East Chrietchurch Educational district met on Thursday evening at seven o'clock, in St John's schoolroom. Present —MessrsW. H. Wynn Williams (chairman), Dymock, Mitchell, Jameson, and the Rev W. J. Habens. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Leave of absence was granted to Mr Thomas. A letter was read from the Board of Education, stating that they could only sanction that Mrs Haughton be paid for every pupil teacher, after five in number, at the rate of £2 per annum. Another letter was also read, stating that with regard to the Bingsland school ground, the Board sanctioned the expenditure of a small sum in order to carry off the waste water, and the employment of a labourer to level the site close to the school. Also sanctioning an additional expenditure for the coal shed at the South Town Belt school. A resolution was passed by the committee, authorizing the sub-committee to carry out the works referred to in the Board's letter. A letter was read from Mr J. B. Taylor, master of the school at the Music Hall, stating that he had employed his son, fourteen years of age, in the room of W. J. Reed, who had been prevented from attending the school through illness. Mr Taylor also applied that his son should be appointed to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of W. C. Armitage. His son would present himself for examination as a pupil teacher of the first year. The committee appointed Robert Witham, a prei vious applicant—who had already passed hie
•xamination as pupil teacher—to the vacancy occasioned by Armitage's resignation. Jas. Taylor's temporary employment was sanctioned. The appointments were subject to the approval of the Board of Education. The sub-committee for the South town belt school brought up a report on thu drainage of the school site, and it was resolved that the subcommittee arrange to have the work carried out. A letter was read from Mr Hobbs, sen., offering to sell a piece of lnnd fronting on Armagh street. The secretary was instructed to reply that the committee were not open to receive any offers at present. A letter was read from Miss Maria Mills applying for an appointment as pupil teacher. The application was ordered to be recorded. Two applications for remission of rates were referred to the rate collector for his report. The chairman drew the attention of the committee to the fact that there were only two main entrances to the school now erecting in Gloucester street. The com« mittee were of opinion that it would be advisable to have a larger number of entrances, and the secretary was instructed to write to the architect to that effect. After passing some accounts the committee adjourned.
