THE ARCTIC EXPEDITION.
Commander Markham has been recently engaged in enquiries regarding the fitness of men who have presented themselves for icemasters of the ships for the expedition. He has not been so successful as he anticipated, having only secured the services of one harpooner, who has been several voyages to Davis's street, and Greenland with Captain Adams, of the Arctic. A great many more men have offered themselves, but the majority of them have not the qualifications the commander desires. The want of suitable men is in a great measure owing to the fact that many of the best hands have already been shipped for the approaching seal fishing. Several of those who have volunteered have satisfactorily passed a medical examination, conducted by Dr Colan. medical officer of the training-ship Unicorn, who has been mentioned as likely to accompany the expedition. The remuneration offered is £IOO a year, with half oil, half outfit. It is not improbable that Commodore Markham may be unable to get all his ice-masters in Dundee, and that he may have to go to Peterhead or Shetland.
