DUNEDIN RACES.

[By Telegraph], {From a correspondent of the Press.} Thibd Dat—Thursday, March 25. Stewards—Hon Robert Campbell, Messrs Henry Driver, James Shand, W. H. Tag gart, Joseph Reany, F. Meenan, C. W. Cutten, Henry Scott, Geo. Dows. Judge— Mr John Stephenson. Starter —Mr George Dodson. Clerk of Course —Mr K. Gourley. Treasurer —Mr James Marshall. Handicappers Messrs Moore, Dodson, and Reany. The third day's races were not quite so well attended, but the weather was splendid, and the sport capital. The Steeplechase was won by Ivanhoe, a Canterbury bred horse, and the winner of many cross couutry events. It was generally supposed that Medora could have won, but of this you will probably hear more. The Town Plate was uninteresting, being a walk over for Mr Delamain. The Rowe Stakes were won pretty easily by Esher, beating two others. For the Forbury Handicap Templeton was scratched. Tadmor was a hot favorite. He led until the straight when Right Bower ran up and won cleverly. He was loudly cheered when weighed in. Tadmor was second, Boomerang third. It was certainly the best race of the meeting. For the Flying Handicap Templeton was scratched, Soranambula being first, Envy second, Elfin King third. The Benevolent Scurry won easily by Lyndon, and £7O was raised foi Benevolent Institution.

Handicap Steeplechase, of 100 sovs, with a sweep of 5 sovs each for acceptors ; the amount accruing from the sweep to go to the second horse. Entrance, 4 sovs. About three miles, over such fences as the stewards may appoint. Mr Barton's b g Ivanhoe, aged, lOst 4 b (Hedge) 1 Mr McKay's ch g BaDJo, aged, 9st 71b (Gall) 2 Mr McKay's b m Medora, aged, list (McKay) 3 Mr Patterson's b m Maid of the Mill, aged, lOst 51b (Williams) 0 Mr Swanson's Mistletoe, aged, 9st 71b (McGregor) 0 Mr Taggart's ch m Maid of Arrow, 4 yrs, 9st (J. Cotton) 0

Sir Tatton was scratched. Medora carried 3Jlbs, Mistletoe 4|lb, and Banjo 91b overweight. Betting—Even against Medora, 3 to 2 against Maid of the Mill, 2 to 1 against Ivanhoe and Banjo, 3 to 1 against any other. The course was the same as last year ; round the course twice, going out to the foot of the sandhills each time, over a certain number of hurdles and one water jump. From the start Medora, Banjo, and Ivanhoe led, Maid of the Mill and Mistletoe next, and Maid of Arrow last. The last • named baulked at the second hurdle ; she cleared it with some persuasion, but got stuck up a little further on. From this she was out of the hunt. The race all through did not present many changes, the three leaders keeping their positions, and all clearing their jumps beautifully, except Maid of the Mill, who refused the water jump the second time round. Medora and Banjo cleared this together in front, Ivanhoe close behind, but on coming on to the course again from the sand hills Medora had unaccountably fallen back, Ivanhoe leading Banjo. Up the straight Barton's gelding was not to be caught, and came in a winner by three lengths, Medora a bad third, Maid of the Mill fourth, Mistletoe fifth. Time, 7min 3sec. So general was the opinion that M'Kay had pulled Medora, who was a hot favorite, that immediately after the races the stewards met and took evidence from eye witnesses of his conduct at the purticular part of the race complained of. Their decision is not yet known, but it will not in any case affect the result of the race.

Town Plate, of 100 sova., with a sweep of 6 sova each, the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweepstakes. Entrance, 4 sovs. Two miles and a quarter. Weight for age. Mr Delamain's b c Templeton, by Traducer—Belle of the Isle, 4 yrs (J. Wattie) 1 Mr Delamain's b c Hercules, 3 yrs, 7st 91b (Rae) 2 Right Bower, Castaway, Traitor, King Philip, and the Tantrums Colt being scratched, this race was virtually a walkover, Mr Delamain declaring to win with Templeton.

Master Kowe Produce Stakes, a sweepstakes of 3 sovs, with a silver cup, value 100 sovs (presented by Mr Pritchard) added, for two-yr-olds, the produce of Master Rowe. Colts, Bst 101 b ; fillies, Bst 71b. Three-quarters of a mile. Mr Blatch's gr c Esher, 2 yrs, Bst 101 b (Lynch) 1 Mr Pritchard's b c, 2 yrs, Bst 101 b (Sellars) 2 Mr Waters' b c, 2 yrs, Bst 101 b (Gibbs) 3 Betting—Even agst Mr Pritchard's colt; 2 to 1 agst any other. All got off at the first attempt, Waters' colt taking the lead, the grey next, favorite last. After a quarter of a mile had been covered, Esher and Mr Pritchard's youngster passed Waters' colt, and the grey showed in front, there being about a length between each of the horses. From this the race was virtually over, as Esher increased his lead, and won by half a dozen lengths, Mr Pritchard's colt second, Mr Waters' last. Time, lmin 35Jsecs.

Forbury Handicap, of 150 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 5 sovseach; the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweepstakes. Nomination. 2 sovs; acceptance, 3 sovs. One mile and a half. Mr Coombe's br h Right Bower, 5 yrs, 7st7lb (Breasill) 1 Mr Nosworthy's br c Tadmor,3 yrs, 7st 21b (Rowland) 2 Mr Taggart's b g Boomerang, 6 yrs, 6st 71b (T. Allen) 3 Mr Campbell's ch h Castaway, 5 yrs, Bst (Richardson) 0 Mr Keenan's cb g Gamecock, aged, 7st4lb (T. Smith) 0

lempleton, Hercules, King Philip, and Tripolis were scratched, so that Delamain had no representative engaged. Betting—3 to 2 on Tadmor, 3 to 2 against Right Bower, 4 to 1 Castaway and Gamecock, 5 to 1 Boomerang. This was considered rather an open race till the horses came out, when Tadmor was made a hot favorite. Castaway was much admired in paddock, but had too much flesh on him. Bower not much backed, offers to lay against him being louder than against any other. After two attempts a good start was made, Gamecock cutting out the work, Tadmor and Castaway close up, Boomerang fourth, and Right Bower last. At half a mile Tadmor was in charge of affairs, and Gamecock was also passed by Castaway, who looked for a time like catching Tadmor. On the opposite side of the course all were in Indian file, at the three quarter mile post Boomerang ran into third place, and Gamecock fell behind Right Bower, who was seven or eight lengths behind Tadmor, and still only in fourth place. Race now appeared to be Nosworthy's, but just before entering the straight Breasil shook up Right Bower, and he shot past Castaway and Boomerang and came up to Tadmor hand over hand. The excitement was now intense, and at last Rowland was seen at work on the colt, but it was without avail, for Coombe's game horse stuck bravely to him, and won a fine race by half a length, Boomerang third, Castaway fourth, Gamecock last. Time, 2min 51£sec. Flying Handicap, of 60 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 2 sovs each, the amount accruing from the sweepstakes to go to the second horse. Three-quarters of a mile. Nomination, 2 sovs ; acceptance, 1 sov. Somnarabula (Richardson) 1

Knvy (Breasel) 2 E!fin King (J. Allen) 3 Lyndon (Malone) 0 Wild Manx Boy (Wiseman) 0 Spritsail (Batty) 0 Earl of Lynne (S.Smith) 9 Verbena (G. Smith) 0 Miss Alfred (Rowland) 0

Tempieton and Hercules were scratched. Betting—6 to 4 agst Somnambula ;2to 1 agst Lyndon, Spritsail, and Elfin KiDg ; 4 to I agst Earl of Lynne and Verbena ; 5 to I agst any other. After one false start they all got well away, Somnambula getting a long way the worst of it, Elfin King and Spritsail showing in front. The whole nine were well together till near the entrance to the straight, the favorite being distinguishable occasionally as she got through her horses, Envy drew up to Elfin King, and coming up the straight running these two had a slight lead, and the race appeared between them ; but suddenly Somnambula's chesnut face was seen between them, and amid uproarious cheers was landed a clear winner by a length, Envy a good second, Elfin King third. Time, lmin 28£sec.
