MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, March 27. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) LARCENY. Elizabeth Arthur was charged with stealing a waterproof cloak from the luggage office, atthe Lyttelton railway station. The accused whowas stated to be a respectable married woman residing at Lyttelton had been making a number of purchases in Christchurch on Tuesday last, and arrived in Lyttelton by the afternoon train. She had laid her parcels down for a few moments in the office, and had taken the cloak away on her return. She was slightly under the influence of liquor at the time. As there was a possibility that r the theft might not have been intentional, his Worship hoped this would prove a lesson to the accused to abstain from taking even the " one or two glasses," she'admitted having drank that day and dismissed the charge. DRUNK AND SOLICITING PROSTITUTION. Margaret Guerin, who had only been released from prison on Wednesday last, was charged with this offence, and sentenced to forty-eight hours imprisonment, as she promised to leave town at the expiration of that time. DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Thomas W. Robson, for drunkenness, was fined ss; Hugh O'Neil, 20s; and George Leatham, 10s. ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. William Randall, who had been found at twenty minutes to two o'clock that morning sleeping in the Borough Hotel stables, wa3 dismissed, as the landlord stated that the accused was lodging at the hotel. ASSAULT. Joseph Rich was charged on remand with violently assaulting his wife. Constable Eares stated that on the morning of the 17th inst from a complaint made to him he went to the house of accused in Durham street north, and found Mrs Rich in bed with her face covered with blood, her head all cut, and a candlestick with which she said her husband had struck her, also marked with blood. Mrs Rich called, said she did not wish to press the charge against her husband, as they had agreed to separate. His Worship adjourned the case until Thursday to allow of the arrangements for a separation being completed. NEGLECTED CHILDREN. George Bray, John Bray, Charles Bray, Eliza Jane Frances Bray, and Fredk Wm Arthur Bray, five children, were brought up under the Neglected Children's Act. They were remanded until Tuesday next, to be kept in custody until that day.
