CRICKET.

ENGLAND V. COLONIES. This match was played on Saturday last, and we cannot say much of the play shewn, the batting being of the most feeble description. England won the toss, and elected to acton the defensive. Watson and Stevens were first to appear against the bowling of B. Fowler and Gulf. In Cuff's first over, Watson was dismissed by a good catch at third man by Wilson, who was fielding as substitute. Sweet played the ball with his leg, a proceeding not approved of by the umpire. One for 2 ;two for 4 Souter now joined Stevens, and a few runs wore put together. The newcomer got a 4 to square leg, but soon afterwards gave an easy chance to short leg, by which was not refused. Neilson came, and a misunderstanding between the batsmen caused him to be run out. Three and four for 16. Taylor- joined Stevens, and better things were hoped for, but when the score had reached 29 the latter put a ball up at the wicket and had to retire. Taylor only survived a few balls, bging bowled by Gulf. Wilson played steadily for his score, but the others seemed to vie with each other in trying to go out. The innings closed for 48, there being no byes of any description. The Colonies then tried their skill with the bat, but with the exception of J. Fowler, the fonn was not good. Wood and J. Fowler went in’first, and made 117 before Wood was caught at short slip. A ball from Souter proved too much for J. Fowler, but not before he had scored 35, by two 4’s to leg, four '3’s various, four 2’s, and singles. Nation made 8 by two 3’s and a 2. The remainder of the Colonies cut a sorry figure, being all out for 55. ; Ollivier did not go in on account of a sprained wrist. The Colonies again took the field; and succeeded in disposing of their opponents for even a smaller score than they made in their first innings. Dickinson and Harman were the only two who made any stand at all, the former making two good leg hits for 3 each, but giving Ollivier a chance at the wicket had to pay the penalty. Harman made a good leg hit for 4, but the next ball proved fatal, J. Fowler grade a splendid

catch- at long-leg in disposing of Taylo r < Another ’fine catch was made by Moore at mid-on, both catches having to be taken by one hand. The match will not be played out, and is therefore won by the Colonies on the first innings. The following is the score : England. First innings. Second innings. E. C. J.
