CORRESPONDENCE.
THE PEAL OF BELLS.
To the Editor of the Glohe. Sir, — Will you allow me to quote the following portion of a paragraph, being a report of a meeting “for the purpose of forming a committee for raising a sum of money, by subscriptions of one guinea and under, to purchase a peal of bells,” which appeared in the Press of 30th November, 1869. It will, I think, partly answer the letter of his Worship the Mayor, in the Glohe, of Saturday last. “His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and called upon Mr De Bourbel, to state what he proposed should be done. Mr De Bourbel proposed that a peal of eight bells should be obtained and paid for by subscription. From information he had received he thought such a peal could be delivered in Christchurch “for £6OO, and that it would cost £3OO to erect a tower for them ; and he proposed that a committe should be formed to collect £IOOO, which he was sure would cover all expenses. . . . He was glad to be able to inform the meeting that he had £IOO out of the £IOOO already in hand.” A large committe was then formed. At a subsequent rheeting subscription lists were issued, and arrangements made to circulate them all over the province. About this time last year, one of the ladies’ committee wrote a letter to the Press, in which she stated that as far as she knew, something under £2O had been collected by two .other ladies of the committee, which they still held. A concert was also given, and was well attended. The proceeds to be devoted to the peal. Mr R. Parker also wrote to say that “ the statement of receipts and expenses was fowarded to Mr De Bourbel. ” I do hope his Worship will use his influence, and tell us what has become of the money. Yours, &c, BELL HOPE,
