ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTB, This Board met on December 3rd. Present, Messrs Fisher (chairman), Dunlop, Attwood, and Mardon. The clerk reported having received ordinary rates £34 15s 9d; Waimakariri, £2 17s 7d; and Government grant, £4Bo—total £517 13s 4d. A letter was read from the Christchurch City Council, enclosing copy of resolution passed at the conference held between them and the Heathcote Road Board on November 20th, lor confirmation by the Board, and also requesting ths Board to withdraw the question as to the .alleged obstructions in the main drain. The enclosed resolution is as follows :—“ That with reference to the drainage of storm water from Jackson’s Creek into the land drain, the Heathcote Road Board shall pay to the City Council the annual sum of £3O for the use of the said drain for the term of three years.” Resolved —“ That the same be confirmed, and a copy sent to the City Council. Also to be informed, that the Board does not intend to raise the question referred to during their occupancy of the said drain, as per resolution, and that the Council be requested to clear all obstructions at once that are in Ihc way of the water entering the said drain.” It was also resolved —“ That Mr Money be informed that unless he removes the obstructions on the road on the eastern boundary of section 1148 within seven days, the Board will proceed against him under the clauses 74 aud 75 of the Road Ordinance. A letter from the Secretary of Public Works was read, stating that the third instalment of grant had been paid to the Board’s credit; also, from the Provincial Engineer, stating that Mr Lcathamhad cm:pleted his contract at Woa Bone Point, on the Sumner road, in a satisfactory manner, when the Board agreed to settle with him for same. It was resolved that for the future the clauses in the Ordinance referring to gorse fences, &c, on the roads will be strictly enforced. The chairman, as a member of the Heathcote and Spreydon Drainage Committee, brought up a report, together with a report of the Spreydon sub-committee. A report of the Provincial Engineer on the Heathcote aud Spreydon drainage was also read, aud after a long discussion, it was resolved—- “ That the report of the Heathcote sub-com-mittee he adopted, and that the committee, in conjunction with the subcommittee of the Spreydon Road Board, be empowered to take such steps as may be deemed necessary in the matter; also that this Board call the attention of the said committee to the dangerous state of the Gas Works road, and the necessity that exists for putting same into proper repair.” Resolved —“That the Government be again written to respectfully requesting them to give their early attention to the matter of the survey of the river roads, as it is a matter of immediate necessity to the Board that the formation of a portion of same should be proceeded with.” It was resolved—“ That Messrs Papprill be requested to send an offer for forming half chain road on the Sandhills, opposite New Brighton.” It was decided that two of the members and the foreman meet at Wilson’s bridge to inspect same. Accounts to the amount of £279 5s 5d were passed for payment, when the Board adjourned to this day fortnight.
MANDEVILLE AND RANGIORA.
This Board met on Friday, December 4th, at the usual hour. Present —Messrs Blackett (chairman), Duncan, Wilson, and Bramley. A letter was read from W. Wilkinson, asking for his rates to be remitted, as he was in receipt of charitable aid, and unable to work. Granted, A letter was read from the Gust Eoad Board, asking the Board to bear half the expense of the formation of road leading to the Mairaki railway station. Thd surveyor was directed to report on the required work at next meeting. Mr R. Truman applied for his rates to be remitted on account of the property for which he was rated being burnt down. Granted. Mr Thomas Stevenson applied for a bridge to be erected over the drain at the end of Boys’ Direct road ; and an application from the contractor for shingling the North road, for the same bridge, was also received. It was resolved that a bridge be erected on a site lower down the drain than the former bridge. Mr Barker attended with plans of the proposed bridge over the No 1 drain, and was requested to draw up specifications of the game.
Mr Bramley asked that the continuation of the FJaxton road, from Kelcher’s to the No 3 drain road, should be made passable, and the surveyor was instructed to have this done, and a ford put in the end of No 4 drain. Tenders were then opened for the following works, viz. :—Clearing out Taranaki Creek and cutting drain ; erecting brick culvert at Cam mill ; widening Kangiora and Woodeud road ; and building cottages at Woodend and Kangiora ; and in each case the lowest tender was accepted. It was resolved that tenders be called for the following works: Forming Church street, Kangiora ; shingling drain road from Southbrook towards Fluxion. And the surveyor was instructed —To have a wooden culvert erected on Beach road ; to procure new dray ; to reform School street footpath, and metal with screenings. It was resolved that the next meeting of the Board be held on Friday, the 18th inst, and the Board adjourned.
