NEWS OF THE DAY.

Cathedral Guild.—A general itieeting of the Guild was held last evening, when a paper was read on hymn tunes, old and new, which was illustrated, by vocal pieces. Kaiapoi Institute,— The special meeting to consider the question of opening this institute on Sundays will be held this evening. Merivalb Church. —We arc requested to call attention, to the fact that Divine Service will be held in the schoolroom at Merivale until the church is sufficiently repaired to allow of its being held there again. The Cab Case. —In Chambers this day, his Honor gave judgment in the cab case, sustaining the appeal against the conviction of Goodyer, on the -ground that the minutes of the special-meeting at which the by-law was made was not signed by the Mayor. Wesleyan Musical Festival— A rehearsal, in connection with the musical festival projected to celebrate the opening of the Durham -street Wesleyan Church organ, took place last evening at the Canterbury Music Hall, when the various pieces were gone through successfully. Entertainment. —An entertainment, comprising a magic lantern display of pictures illustrative of the second part of “Pilgrim’s Progress,” with appropriate selections of vocal music, will be given this evening in the schoolroom of Durham-street Wesleyan Church. The proceeds will be devoted towards the school building fund. Harmonic Society. —The usual practice of the society will fake place this evening at the Music Hall, when Handel’s “ Samson ” will be rehearsed. At 9 p.m the annual general meeting of the society will be held, at which the officers for the ensuing year will be elected and the report of the committee presented. The Gourlays. These clever artistes gave two of their entertainments at the Colonists’ Hall on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and a final performance on Wednesday night, in which they were assisted by Mr J. Carder. The audiences were large on each occasion, and the programme submitted gave the greatest satisfaction. Theatre Royal. —The bill of the previous evening was repeated at the Theatre Royal last night. This evening has been set apart for a juvenile night, when children will be admitted free to all parts of the house. To-morrow evening, “ Grif,” founded on Mr B. L. Fargeou’s novel of that name, will be produced,. St Luke’s Entertainment.— The second of the scries of the winter entertainments in connection with St Luke’s, took place last evening, when notwithstanding the somewhat unfavorable weather there was a fair attendance. A good programme consisting of readings, songs, and instrumental pieces was gone through successfully. Philosophical Institub. A meeting of the Philosophical Institute was held last evening at the Public Library, the president (Dr Haast) in the chair. Present—His Honor Mr Justice Gresson, the Revs J. W. Stack and W, J. Habcns, Drs Powell, Coward, and Turnbull, Messrs Inglis, Tancred, Fereday, Wakefield, Condell, and Guthrie, Mr A. R. Inwood was elected a member of the institute, and Mr Bickerton was proposed by Dr Turnbull and seconded by the Rev J. W. Stack. Dr Powell then read a paper on “ The coloring matter of HtcmalncoccvK sail(jalnuus” The meeting then separated.

Entertainment.—The annual entertainraent by the employes of the Canterbury Meat Preserving Company, will he held this evening at the factory, comprising a soiree and ball. A train will leave Christchurch at 6.25 p.m., returning from the factory at midnight. Judging from the success attending the efforts made last year by the hosts for the comfort of their guests, the entertainment offered ought to attract a large number of visitors. Horticultural Society, —A meeting of the committee of the above was held last evening, Mr W. Wilson in the chair; Mr Low was elected a member of the committee in room of Mr Wallace, resigned. Offers of extra prizes were received from the president, Messrs G, Gould, J. M. Smith, Crooks, Reid, Leigh, Allen, and Greenaway. Messrs W. Wilson, G. Gordon, and Crooks were appointed as a sub-committce to obtain further extra prizes, and the printing of prize schedules was deferred until they had brought up. their report. The monthly meeting of the society was then held, Mr Crooks occupying the chair. The president, Mr W. Wilson, read a paper on “ Californian Couifenc.” Messrs Gordon, Chudley, Greenaway, and Easterbrook made remarks upon the paper, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Wilson for his paper. At the next; monthly meeting, Mr Chudley will open a discussion on the question whether instructions ought to be given to judges at the shows of the society. PAPANUI Library. —Notwithstanding the very unfavorable weather there was a large attendance at (St. Paul’s schoolroom, Papanui, last' evening, when a soiree arid' entertainment were given in aid of the Papanui Library Fund. ’ About two hundred guests sqt down to tea, which was provided by Mcsdames Jennings, Langdown, B. Matson, J. T. Matson, G. Dunnage, Jackson, and Preston, and Misses Hancock and Norman. After tea an entertainment took place, at which Mr 11. Matson presided. An apology was read from Mr. Yule,, regretting, his inability to be present! The programme, which consisted :of recitations, readings, and .songs, was successfqlly. performed, and when the audience departed for their homes, it was apparently with the impression that a pleasant evening had been spent.
