[Reuteu's Special Telegram.] The Albion, with English mail, left Melbourne at nine p.m. on the 27th. Had head winds all the passage, but made the rapid run of four days sixteen hours, and arrived at the Bluff at 3.40 p.m. on the 2nd. She sails for Dunedin at seven p.rn. to-night. She brings twenty-eight saloon, thirty steerage, and 250 tons cargo for all ports. Passengers for Lyttelton—Miss Crosby, Mr Winslow, Mr Woodward, Mr Hammersly, Mr Alington, 5 steerage, and thirty tons calgo. London, June 24. . In the House of Commons, Plimsoll’s Merchant Shipping -Survey Bill has been defeated on the second reading by 173. to 170. The Government opposed the measure, stating that the Royal Commissioners’ report was signed, and would be distributed shortly. The Queen is expected to visit St. Petersburg in September. Largo sales of teas are made in consequence of news from Foo Chow stating the market is higher and the quality of teas inferior. A telegram from Batavia reports that sugar is advancing-rapidly. A ••telegram states Conuessy commences selling brandy at 200 francs per hectolitre. Salt has advanced owing to the small simply shipped.

Owen, Lower Queen street, adjoining Messrs Owen and Grahams. Shortly after seven the flames have just broken through the windows, and it threatens to be a moat destructive lire. There was no water for half an hour after its discovery, and there is no organised brigade. Mr J. McKay’s sou
has been earned out of Owen and Graham’s store suffocated; Dr Wright is with him. He is expected- to recover. The wind is S.W. The store contained kauri gum, paper, &c., which gave out a very heavy smoke, increasing the difficulty and danger encountered by those engaged, in extinguishing it; nevertheless, a large number of willing volunteers, including Mr Thomas Russell, mounted the roof and did good service. Mr Mackay, who was carried out, is recovering. The insurance is not yet ascertainable. 9.45 p.m, G. W. Owens, the Harbor Board, and Mr Gilfillau’s belonged to the New Zealand Insurance Company ; Owen’s was insured - in the Victoria for £4OO, and the balance in their own office. Owen’s stock was insured as follows—New Zealand, £1500; Royal, £500; Liverpool, London and Globe, £500; South British, about £BOO. The Victoriau had £I2OO on the three buildings. Their loss will be only about £SO. Nothing was saved from Owen’s store., - The grain , market is firm.
