ROAD BOARDS.
* GRAIN'S BAY. A meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday, June 13th. All the members were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from Secretary of Public Works, enclosing an application made by Mr Thacker for permission to construct a tramway on a portion of the main road, Okaiu’s bay. The Board resolved to state, in reply, that it regretted that Mr Thacker had again ignored the existence of a Road Board in the district; that it had not been consulted as to what portion or portions of the Main road Mr Thacker referred to in his letter ; and that, while it did not wish to act prejudicially to Mr Thacker’s interests, it would reserve to itself the right of enforcing clause 74, Canterbury Roads Ordinance, 1872, if found to be necessary. A letter was read from Mr Smith, Leßon’s Bay, with reference'to the saw-dust nuisance complained of. The Board resolved to act under clause 74, Roads Ordinance, and call for tenders for
clearing the creek from the Saw Mill to the Deep Hole, of the sawdust accumulated in it, A letter was read from Mr Green, Little Akaloa, requesting the Board to replace a portion of ihis fence that had been removed by a contractor. The Board resolved to cause the said fence to be replaced forthwith. The Board resolved to repair, where necessary, the Beach road, Little Akaloa. The Board expressed its satisfaction of the manner in which Mr Pawson’s contract for Valley road, Little Akaloa, had been fulfilled. The Board resolved that J. Kelly be written to, calling his attention to the time allowed for the completion of his contract on the Stony Bay road, and also to request his immediate removal of the fallen timber obstructing the line of road. It was resolved to call for fresh tenders for erecting bridges in Little Akaloa valley ; also, for felling and clearing to the width of a chain the new line of road to the dividing ridge in the Okain’s Bay valley. The Board resolved that Mr Thacker be requested to remove the culvert he had placed in the road without permission, otherwise the Board -would enforce clause 74, Roads Ordinance, 1872, in the matter. The collector was instructed to inform those ratepayers whose rates were not paid for the present year, that if they were not paid within fourteen days, the Board would sue for the same. The Board sanctioned the payment of H. Bailey’s contract as soon as the work is completed, on the certificate of the member for Le Bon’s Bay that the work has been satisfactorily performed.
