BOROUGH COUNCIL.

♦ LYTTELTON. Monday, June 16. The Council held its usual weekly meeting. Present—The Mayor, Crs Hawkins, Burst, Graham, and Young. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts amounting to £lO 16s were passed for payment. The following letters were read and discussed:— From Mr A. J. Sogers, calling the attention of the Council to the present state of the road and side channels on Brittan terrace. The surface drainge, instead of keeping its proper course, was running through his garden to the detriment of his lawn and fruit trees. The matter was referred to the foreman of the works. From Mr W. Packard, complaining of the manner in which the scavenger had carried out his duties, stating that the contractor was paid a certain sum per month for the duties required, and he wished to know if he would not be justified in deducting any sum which might be paid by him for non-fulfil-ment of the work. Cr Graham drew the attention of the Council to the state of the school closets, which were anything but satisfactory, and required immediate attention. After some' discussion, the complaints referred to were left in the hands of his Worship tlje Mayor. Accounts amounting to £lO 6s were passed for payment. His Worship stated that the petition asking the Government to provide proper hospital accommodation for the town had been signed by upwards of 200 persons, and had been forwarded to Mr H. R. Webb, member for the town, for presentation. His Worship brought forward the matter of removing the steps leading to the premises in the occupation of Mr E. A. Hargreaves, at the corner of London and Dublin streets. After a short debate, the matter was left to the works committee. The Council then adjourned.
