DISC OVERT SIGHTS KERG-EEL-FN ISLAND AN rMPPESSIVE SPECTACLE CANBERRA. Feb. 10. Sir Joseph Mawson sent a wireless message, dated February ~ as follows : : “Since February 3 the Discovery made steady progress under steam and sail, and this morning sighted Kerguelen Island.- the rugged coastline, backed by a succession of high mountain peaks, presenting an impressive spectacle. Seen from the south, we observed a remarkable profusion of bird lito at Benedict group of islets, chiefly penguins of several species, with half a dozen varieties of petrels, and many albatrosses, nil bent on skimming the marine life, which is abundant in the sea hereabouts. As darkness closed in we were thankful to have sighted the dangerous Salamanca break, which is so far off shore as to constitute a real peril to the odd ships traversing these waters. To-morrow the Discovery should be safely moored at Joanne d‘Arc.
