MOTOR BOATING

SPEED CHAMPIONSHIP OF N.X. WON BY “J. AND J.” WANGANUI, Jan. 23. The Wanganui Regatta on Saturday. was attended by live or six thousand people. The weather was beautiful and the sport was exciting. Great interest was taken in the Maspori Cup race, tlie speed championship of New Zealand, which was won by Alderton Bros.' “J. and J.” (Wanganui) by fifty-five seconds from the Auckland boat, l'leetwing, Junr., the course being fifteen nautic-.il miles, and the time 26min 25sec. The Kotuku (Wanganui) also started, hut broke down. The Nonesuch (North Auckland), Miss Cheltenham (Auckland), and Little Jim (Wanganui' were non starters owing to engine trouble. In the Helena Cup Handicap race, the One Step (Wanganui) caught -fire and Spot Second (Auckland) overturned on the bend. The l'leetwing, Junr was first over and won the prize money, but ‘‘J. and J.” made the fastest time and was awarded the cup. The Maori events were very interesting, the Ngaruawaliia visitors being very successful. At the close of the regatta “J. and J.” made a dash to establish a N.Z. speed record, and touched 50 miles an hour. —P.A.
