A PECULIAR GAVE
ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO GET MONEY FROM. A POLITICIAN.

The hearing of the charges agair.kfc Cullen end McCarthy allegedly of seeking to obtain money from Murphy, a member of the Legislative Assembly, has opened. Murphy gave evidence that he attended a meeting of a sub-committee of the executive of ihe Australian Labor party in connection. with a protest which had been lodged regarding his alleged contravention of certain rules. Subsequently, he attended a meeting at which ho was asked to show cc.u.-e why he should not be expelled from the party. The meeting was adjourned. Afterwards he received a telephone message which led him to interview tho police. They gave certain advice in accordance with which lie arrar.gc-d to meet Cullen and McCarthy. A member or the central executive was also present at the meeting at which it was alleged the undertaking was reached that the balloting would bo so arranged that Murphy's expulsion from the party- would be rescinded, - contingent upon the payment of £SO. Murphy then arranged to me t Cullen and McCarthy in the presence cf the police as already cabled.—U.P.A.
