WHEAT PROBLEM
N.Z. GROWERS PERTURBED
ASHBURTON, Oct, 27
The Wheat Board has sent the following telegram to Air Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture: “The Board is perturbed at the Government’s action in lifting the duty on l’owi wheat and particularly objects to the date to which this wheat may lie landed, in view of the report to the Board that an early local harvest may he expected. Duty free wheat landing in January must come into eompeiTtion with" the new season’s homegrown wheat. The Board respectfully asks what steps the Government is taking to protect the new season’s wheat from unfair competition with any imported wheat that has not passed into consumption at the elate of reimposition of the duty. The Board desires to know the Government’s intention regarding an increase in duty on flour as promised in reply to a resolution passed at a meeting of wheat growers in Christchurch in February last.” The following reply has been sent by Air Nosworthy to the chairman of the Board, Afr Leadley, “In reply to your telegram, please inform the Board that the Government is issuing permits to import wheat duty free in restricted quantities limited to current requirements. The quantity which may be on hand when the season’s harvest is available would he small and only sufficient to meet roasnable North Island requirements until southern supplies arc available. In regard to increased flour duties this matter will bo brought before the House before the session closes.” —P.A.
