Much attention has been attracted by* a speech of Bishop Edwin Hughes, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, who defended the methods of the present-day flapper. 1 Bishop Hughes - said: ‘The young women of to-day were better than those of previous generations, despite the fact that we criticise their hair, nude stockings, shoes, skirts cosmetics, ar.'d manners; Robbed hair is better than hanged hair (the unshapely cart of 25 years ago). .. ■ . “Moreover, the present skirt is preferable-to the old-fashioned hoop skirt, and the banana song is preferable to the songs of a generation ago, which ridiculed Biblical characters.
