CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
■MONTHLY MEETING. The usual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in tho Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, there being present; Messrs J. W. Bright (chairman). J. R. FiX'dstono, T. E-.-'i'oncyiiifl'e, C. G. Bloore, Majjiiand T. Thorne-George, A. S. Wachsmann, and Mr Hamilton Irvine (secretary). CORRESPONDENCE. Mr W. A. Btlddoe, Canadian Trade Commissioner, in reply to-an invitation to address the Chamber at Gisborne, replied that he had'hoped to he present at Gisborne during July, but lie had been prevented from coming. Ho would, however, take the first convenient opportunity in tiie near future to address the Chamber. The letter was received.
'The lion. W. H. Merries (Minister of Railways) wrote regarding the Chamber’s representation lor a station master at Puna.' Me stated that the matter had been inquired into and found that the traffic at Puha did not warrant the appointment of a stationmaster. A c-nange had been marie,m the personnel! of the staff there and a new porter had been instructed to see as tar as possible that outsiders were prevented from interfering with, consignments. Members expressed the opinion that it- was not- the fault ol the man in charge, but. the system that was objected to. Under present conditions the porter wei.it away for meals and also had on occasion to go to To Karaka to assist in shunting, and during these periods the goods at the station were left unprotected. It was decided to peg away and endeavor to get the matter rectified. The Minister of Public Works, Hon. \Y. Eraser, wrote stating that the representation of the Chamber to have the railway line extended from Ivow,hui Road to Motu was receiving his careful consideration, .and estimates were being prepared, lie stati d that the Chamber was wrong in assuming that there was any agreement between himself and Mr MacDonald to make provision for a'light linfc between Ivowhai Road and -Motu. The. letter was received. The Hon. A. L. Merdman (Minister for Justice) wrote acknowledging receipt of the Chamber's representation for the amendment of the Bankruptcy Act (already published in the - 'Times' ’) and added that idle question of the amendment to deal with dissolution of partnersnip before bankruptcy had been noted and would receive careful consideration should it be decided to introduce legislation this session. The letter was received. A notification was received from the Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce stating that- an honorary New Zealand representative bad .been appointed in India, and that the Government in this connection had been able to secure the services pi Air R. L. 15. Gall, senior partner ih the firm of Messrs Landale and Clark. Ltd., Calcutta. Particulars received from Air Gall and likely to be of interest would be notified from time to time, and on inquiries relative to conditions in India would be passed on. The letter was received._ The Incorporated Soldiers and Sailors Help Society, of London, wrote siatiug that- as a permanent memorial to. the late Earl Roberts it bad been derided to extend the workshops joe ■disabled soldiers and sailors, winch sought to teach men disabled on active service various trades, such as basket making, carving, framing, etc. in order to do this a considerable sum of money was needed, __ and the Chamber was asked 4 J> eontiimite. The Chairman said that the* local Defence Committee were keeping a considerable sum of the money the.v had in hand in order to help our own \cw Zealand wounded. The scheme that was in view was not one of charity but one that would endeavor to put the unfortunate men in some kind of business so that they could make their own living and be, in a sense, independent. Every penny of the money that they had would be needed for the wounded of our own countrj. \'o action was taken in the mattei. OTHER BUSINESS, The matter of a representative at the (onference of Chambers of Commerce was left in the hands 01 the Chairman. Ah- J. R. Redstone Inked it anything had been heard in reference to the road to Tologa Ray. Air Bright stated that the last he had hoard was that the Tologa Bay people were moving in the direction <>i a light railway. Air Redstone; They will want a react as well. . , 'flu' Chairman said that whatever was done they should all pull together. _ ‘ . . ■ Mr Bloore expressed the opinion that me road should come first. Air Wachsmann said that the Coast road at the present time was the best road in the district. The road to Pnkarae was in good order, and along the beach at low tide was good going. Certainly in the winter time this route was better than any of the roads m the district. .. ft was decided to write to the Coiintv Councils asking if .anything bad been done. Air Bloore brought up the subdivision of the Taliora Block, near Motu. Last' 'winter representations had been made to the iSniveyor-Gen-"eral to have a survey taken, but a reply had been received stating that owing to the fog it was impossible for a survey to be taken. • Air Bloore asked if anything had been, done in the summer to get a survey taken. The Taliora. Block contained an area of 30,000 acres, ot beautiful country, and is subdivision was a matter of importance to Hie district. • . On the-niotion of Mr Bloore, seconded bv the Chairman, it was decided to write to the Surveyor-General askintr if anything had been done to take a survey of t.ne Taliora Block as promised. ' „
