Harold Williams, alias .Smith, charged with being drunk in Reel ;-1.;-'ot Appeared before Mr Elorar.ce at Die Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. Senior-Sergeant Hutton stat'd that the accused had been ,we -;uiid.Y convicted during the last ye o', (ut not in the last six months. defendant pleaded guilty, and was lined 10s and costs 2s in default IS hours’ hard labor.

Alexander Bishop was charged with assaulting John Hollingworth, aiid John Hollingworth with assaulting Alexander Bishop. Both pleaded guilty. The brawl took place in' the. yard of the British Empire Hotel v and both accused were partly drunk. Bishop appeared to be the aggressor. Hollingworth was convicted and filled £1 and costs 2s, in default sever) days, and Bishop .£2 and costs 2s, in default 14 days.

Henry George -White, charged with being the owner of sheep infected -with lice at Matawhero saleyards, pleaded guilty - and was fined 10s and costs gs. Harold Williams, alias Smith, was further charged with being a rogue and A'agaboiid, and with being in possession of’a pick-lock key. Accused pleaded not guilty. Constable Watt deposed that lie arrested the accused at 5 p.m. yesterday in a drunken condition. Oil searching the prisoner at the Police Station he found him to.be in possession of a skeleton key, produced, capable of opening any lock of the .size to which the key corresponded. Accused said it was the key of his bedroom, but did not say where he 1 i red. Defendant admitted that the key produced had been in his possession. It bach been given him by a man named McDougall, with whom he shared a room at the Strand Cate. The room was No. 19. McDougall on going to work on Thursday morning had given witness the key to lock the room when witness left. Witness was last ont of the room, and locked the door. McDougall would probably he unable to enter Ills room that night, as witness was arrested with the key on him. Mr Davidge, the proprietor, did not give him the key. Ho got it from McDougall. Questioned by Senior-Sergeant Hutton, a censed adm i t ted severe l ore vion s convictions, mostly for vagrancy and theft. The <aso /was adjourned till 2 o’clock in order to verify the statement that,, the key belonged to room No. 19, Stand Cafe, as accused said. On resuming at 2 o’clock. SeniorSeygeant Hutton stated that the police had investigated defendant’s story, and had found it to lie correct. The. keys were supplied to'the boarders hv the proprietor’ of the Strand Cafe.' - . ’ / . /
