BAY OF ISLANDS ELECTION. (Press Association Telegram.) AUCKLAND, July 12. Judges Chapman and Husking have settled the costs in connection vyitn the Bay of Islands election petition. Vernon" Reed pays ad costs, except in respect to those charges which were withdrawn. BANKING RETURNS. WELLINGTON, July 12. The hanging returns for the quarter ended June 30 show an excess in deposits of over live millions compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The figures for the quarter just closed ere as follows: Government deposits, £3.075.251 ; free deposits £17,436,379; fixed deposits, £11.203,774: advances, £21,982,144; discounts, £1,441,427: in circulation, £2.824.900; coin and bullion, £6.- / 59,082; ;\ 1A 0 HIX ERY INSPECT lON ACT. WELLINGTON. July 12. A deputation representing the Firemen’s Union urged on Mr Retries a stricter administration of the section of the Inspection of Machinery Act providing that men in charge of engines- shall not he compelled to attend oilier duties. The Minister said he would obtain a report from officers, and confer with the Minister of Public Works, with a view to having the Act more strictly administered if the circuinstances warranted. A SERIOUS CHARGE. DUNEDIN, July 12. Charles King appeared at the Police Court to-day to answer a charge of opening and detaining a postal pocket, viz., a letter. Accused who was employed at the L/Oviathan Hotel* as a porter, reserved his defence, and was committed, for trial.
