IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
THE DUTY OF THE CITIZEN. WARNING BY MR. HALDANE. United Press Association. Copyright LONDON, Jan. 29. Mr. Haldane, in a speech in London, while combating compulsory service as regards regulars, referred contemptuously to the man who amuses himself and does nothing for the country. He remarked that it was not improbable that a short and sharp Act of Parliament in war time would compel such a person to do his duty in some defined and some very inconvenient and unpleasant part of the country.
THE NAVY. A SATISFACTORY PRONOUNCEMENT. LONDON, Jan. 29. Mr. McKenna, First Lord of the Admiralty, speaking at the Fishmongers’ Hall, made a strong pronouncement as to the Government determination to fulfil Mr. Asquith’s pledge to fully maintain the relative superiority of the fleet.
