GISBORNE CLUB
A considerable number of members of the Gisborne Bowling Club mustered on the club’s green on Saturday -afternoon, when a very pleasant time was spent. Tlho' green was in good order for playing, and several interesting games were got off. Decidedly the most interesting was a game in the competition for the President’s Cup, between F. A. Martin and ' J. Coleman. This furnished one of the finest exhibitions of single-handed play ever witnessed on the green. Both competitors played exceedingly, well, putting up a number of exceij. lout heads. On the 19th head the, score was equal*—2o all. Coleman gained three on the 20th head, bub •Martin equalised matters by putting up three on the 21st. -Oil the deciding head Martin scored -a single point and won the game by tho narrowest possible majority, the total being — Martin 24, Coleman 23. The result of the other games were as follows : Paltridge, Pavitt, Mclntosh, F. A. Martin (skip) 24, beat Voale, Wilson, Hookey, Ponsford (skip) 20. J. F. Pettie, Birss, dfwerson (skip) 21, beat Johnstone, Bright, H. Lewis (skip) 10. W. Pettie, Kyme. Coleman, Witty (skip) 23, beat Wootton, Dr. Morrison, Haybittle, Chambers (skip) 18. This game aroused special interest, as three visitors, Dr. Morrison and Mr. Haybittle from the Nerehana, and Mr. Chambers, of Wellington, were included in one of the teams. They had the (assistance of Mr. Wootton to lead, and put -up a very good fight-.
TUR/ANG A NUT CLUB
There was a very large gathering of bowlers on the Turanganui Club’s grounds on Saturday afternoon, when a large number of practice and match games were played,' the Bennett Cup singles being’ further advanced, and the first round in the Colts’ Singles continued. The green was in splendid order, playing very keen. The .following are the results of the match games: BENNETT CUP. A. Sawyer (24) beat M. G. Nasmith soar. (11). — Up to the 12th head the game was even, Sawyer then being 9 to 7, but from this point Sawyer drew away, winning eventually by •12 points. J. J. Martin (25) beat W. J. P. Gaudin (15) —Martin gob a commanding lead in the first few heads, and was never thereafter seriously troubled, winning easily bv 10 points. J. P. Williams (21) beat B. Hird (17). —-Hird scored 7 on tho first four heads, but Williams drew level on the 12tli head —11 all. The lStli head showed Williams 18 to 17, and scoring repeatedly, lie won a good game by 4 points. C. J. Bennett (15) beat W. Hay (10). This game was decided on sixteen heads by agreement. (Bennett assumed the lead from the start, and won 'all the way. COLTS’ SINGLES.
AV. Hay (24) 'beat G. Edwards (8). —Tbis -was a one-sided game throughout, Hay never being troubled, for his opponent only scored on four heads, one point .on each head, the scoro on the 21st head standing at 24 to 4. Edwards received a handicap of four points, but this allowance only eased defeat to a margin of 16 points.
