WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. According to an interview with the Premier published by the “Times,” Sir Joseph Ward expects a surplus for the yenr of £142,843. The estimated revenue is £9,100,000, ami the balance brought forward £767,849. The expenditure, he estimates, will be £8,925,000, and £BOO,OOO iis to be transferred to the Public Works Fund leaving the surplus mentioned. In the Budget lie reckoned the surplus would be £74,052. The- Premier considers this a good result in the face of the concessions in Customs duties, -sheep tax, etc., amounting to £425,000. During the hast nine months tlie Advances to Settlers Department has iloaned out £939,015 to settlors, -and £239,310 to workers.
