STEALING SHIP’S STORES.
STEAMER’S COOK CONVICTED
[Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 27. At the Police Court this morning, John Learney, ship’s cook ou board the s.s. Wliakatane, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on a charge of entering the store-room of the steamer and taking twelve bottles of stout. It was stated that thirteen cases wore missing from the stores. Suspicions had been aroused owing to a number of men being observed under the influence of liquor, and the chief steward and fourth officer hid themselves in the store-room and caught accused red-handed. Accused asked why the officer and steward had fired at him in the store-room, to which the steward replied that they had fired a blank cartridge to frighten him, as he was dangerous when under the influence of liquor.
