A SCOW MASTER IN TROUBLE.

ALLEGED DEFALCATIONS. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. __ At the Police Court this morning Edwin McGuerney, a scow master, .was charged on seven informations with having received sums totalling about £l2O on behalf of Messrs Macklow Bros., and with having fraudulently failed to account ior them. It was stated by the prosecution that the accused was employed about the end of October, 1907, as master of the scow Ivia Ora. The vessel was to be worked on shares, tin: accused' taking two-thirds of the earnings'of the scow, out of which he paid all wages and stores. The other third went to the firm. Out of that they had to pay the upkeep of the vessel. Five per cent of the gross earnings was deducted and given to the owners or agents, according to which party found the freight. It was not the accused’s duty to collect freights, but if he did so. he should account to the firm. All went well for .sonic time, until it was discovered, the prosecution alleged, that the accused had collected various freights and had not accounted for them. Accused,, who .pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Bail was' allowed in one suretv of £IOO.
