GERMANY IN THE PACIFIC.

DEBATE IN THE REICHSTAG. GERMAN OPINIONS OF AUSTRALIA. United Piiess Association, Copyright (Received Jan. 27. 11.45 p.m.) BERLIN. Jan. 27. After Herr von Betlimann. Hollweg, Minister of the Interior, and Herr Dernburg, Minister for the Colonies, had spoken, a Government Bill subsidising the North German Lloyd’s South Sea services was referred to a •committee. Most parties supported the .subsidy owing to British and Japanese competition. Herr Halm, Conservative, remarked that, without wishing to say a. word against Britain, it was natural that the Australians should not view German development with satisfaction, .and if the German line was discontinued the cause would certainly emanate from Australia. Herr Hormann, Radical, of the People’s Party, declared tnat Germany was in a comparatively favorable position in regard to Australia, which, in German opinion, was iollowing quite an erroneous, narrow-mind-ed immigration policy aiming to exclude the competition of foreign laborers, without whom the development of Australia was impossible. That was a two-fold, reason for Gcimans seizing any opportunity of extracting what advantage they could, from, the situation. Herr Sender, National Liberal, -supported the Bill on the ground of the influence exercised by JJriti.sh freight charges on the German copra trade.
