THE SINKING OF THE REPUBLIC NARROW ESCAPE OF THE CAPTAIN. United Press Association. Copyright NEW YORK, Jan. 25. While being towed the Republic suddenly sank, stern first. Captain Selby and a small crew aboard were forced to swim or cling to debris. They were rscued with great difficulty in the Gresham’s boats. Captain Selby, who was clinging to' some gratings, was almost exhausted.
THE WIRELESS MESSAGES. HEROIC OPERATORS. (Received Jan. 26, 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 26. Mr. John Burns, of Peterborough, England, the Republic’s Marconi operator, for sticking to his post and transmitting a message despite the destruction of the deck-house where the ethergraph apparatus was located, was eulogised by Mr. Henry Boutell in the House of Representatives. The roof and sides of the deck-house •threatened to fall at any moment. The Baltic’s operator, Mr. Tattersall, stuck to his post for 56 hours, sending cheering messages to the Republic and communicating with the shore.
