CYCLING.

MAKAURI ROAD RACE.

After a’couple of postponements, owing to unfavorable weather, the Makauri road race was got off last evening. Eighteen out of nineteen entrants started and there was a. fairly strong head wind against the competitors on the outward journey. The roads, although fine and dry, were exceedingly bumpy, a state of "affairs which militated considerably against the back-markers. Tlio winner turned up in A. Anderson, off the 60sec. mark, with A. Wilkinson (40 sec), and N. Ingram (80 sees) in second and third places, Anderson rode well throughout and finished very strongly four lengths ahead of Wilkinson, who was half a dozen lengths .ahead of Ingrain. The finish was considered to be one of tlie best seen hitherto in connection with local racing. The winners’ time was 34min. 20 secs., and A. G. Gerraixl, who finished fourth, receives a gold medal presented by Mr A. Rusher for tlie unplaced rider completing the course in tlie fastest time. The other prizes were: Ist gold medal (presented by Mr H. Andresodi), 2nd., pair of Bates’ tyres (presented by E. Reynolds and Go.) ; 3rd, gold and silver medal (presented by Mr. J. Thompson). There were a" number of spills during the race, Huston, Davies and W. Wilkinson each coming to grief, hut they, fortunately escaped any serious injury. This race was the first of a series for the cup presented by Air D. J. Barry. The next race will take place on tlie last Thursday in January to Ormond and back, and .at the end of the following month another race will be held to Te Karaka and back. The placed riders and the unplaced rider doing the fastest time in each event, compete in the final ..race, and for this event the riders are toTe allowed to choose their own course.
