A WELLINGTON FATALITY.

DEATH FROM EXPOSURE. [Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Dec. S. Dr. M. McArthur, Coroner, held ail inquiry at the district -hospital! today touching the death of William •Hills, the carpenter who was picked up in >an unconscious condition near Newtown Park on Sunday afternoon, and who died at the hospital-early this '.morning. John Ewart, 'medical superintendent of the hospital, said the deceased was admitted at 5 p.m. on (Sunday evening. He was in a very weak and exhausted condition, and was semiconscious. There were bruises upon various parts of the body. The, 'eftarm was paralysed, and there wove evidences of -brain injury. He had a had sore on the lower part of the back. Deceased’s condition did not improve from the time of admission. Tho cause of death was exhaustion from exposure and starvation. The bruises were probably caused by a fall, abrasions on the body pointing to that th«jry. Deceased must have laid in 'tlio same position for some considerable time. There was a bruise on tho left side of the scalp, although there was no fracture. Witness was of opinion that deceased became unconscious when he fell. Andrew Orawshaw said that deceased had been working for him for about a fortnight. Witness saw the deceased on Tuesday, December Ist, at 4.30 p.m. He had asked in the morning for ihalf-a-day’s leave, which was granted. Deceased came back -at 4.30 p.m. the same day. He was not fit to work, being intoxicated. Deceased said ho would come the next {uorning, ibut that was the last witness saw of him. To get home -deceased could go past, the tramway sheds, where lie was found. The widow of the deceased and the two hoys who discovered him Tying in the ‘ditch also gave evidence, hut no fresh flight was thrown on the matter.

Dr. MArtlmv’s finding was in accordance with the‘medical evidence. Deceased, who was 44 years of age, was born in Tasmania. Ho had-been in Now Zealand for. throe years. He leaves a widow - and one child,
